South Australia’s police chief wants the force to reflect frankly on the circumstances leading up to last week’s murder-suicide involving a young mother in the state’s south-east, saying police must ask themselves “did we get it right?”<\/p>\n

SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens has strongly cautioned against assumptions that the situation could have been handled differently.<\/p>\n

But he acknowledged there were questions to answer after it was revealed Helena Wright had attended a police station the day before she was found dead.<\/p>\n

The bodies of Ms Wright and her 23-month-old daughter were recovered from waters off Port MacDonnell<\/a> on July 27.<\/p>\n

Ms Wright’s three-month-old son is also presumed to have died but his body has not been found.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday last week, police confirmed that Ms Wright had attended the Mount Gambier Police Station the day before she was found dead<\/a>, but they did not provide any further detail about that episode.<\/p>\n

In an interview with ABC News, Commissioner Stevens said while he could not “disclose the content of that interaction”, he could confirm Ms Wright “was spoken to by a police officer”.<\/p>\n

He said police were preparing a report for the coroner which would consider the tragedy in its entirety.<\/p>\n

“I’m not presuming we could have done things better,” he said.<\/p>\n

“But what I am enquiring into is ‘did we get it right?’ And if there were opportunities for change, then we would instigate those changes.”<\/p>\n

The commissioner said the report for the coroner would be broad-ranging in its scope, as was standard practice, and would consider both the immediate causes and the broader circumstances of what had occurred.<\/p>\n

“It’s not just about the incident itself where Helena is presumed to have taken her own life,” he said.<\/p>\n

“It will be about all of the events that led up to that particular point in time, so that will include interactions with police going back as long as necessary.”<\/p>\n

When asked whether there were additional interactions between Ms Wright and police, the commissioner said he could not “elaborate any further”.<\/p>\n

He said that if the process of preparing a coronial report revealed opportunities for improvement then police would swiftly implement them.<\/p>\n

“We take away findings from that, from our own point of view, to make sure there are changes in service delivery, regardless of the circumstances or which event you’re talking about,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We do our own reflection, and we make changes prior to any coronial inquest.”<\/p>\n

‘A good thing’ Corrections’ call corrected<\/p>\n

In a wide-ranging conversation with the ABC, the commissioner was also asked about the soon-to-be-vacant state governor’s role, as well as recent controversy surrounding a woman who assaulted a pregnant police officer and was released on home detention almost a year before she was eligible for parole.<\/p>\n

Raina Cruise, 43, was jailed two years ago after she pleaded guilty<\/a> to two counts of aggravated assault and was found guilty of one count of intentionally causing harm to Constable Anthea Beck in October 2021.<\/p>\n

In June 2025, the anti-vaccine protester was sentenced to three years, nine months and two weeks in prison after South Australia’s Court of Appeal overrode the District Court’s decision<\/a> to suspend her sentence and impose a good behaviour bond.<\/p>\n

The court ordered Cruise to be ineligible to apply for parole until June 2027.<\/p>\n

But it was revealed last week, by Cruise herself in a video on Facebook, that she had been released on home detention from the Adelaide Women’s Prison.<\/p>\n

That revelation prompted strenuous objections from SA Police’s Deputy Commissioner Linda Williams, who said Cruise’s release from prison had “shocked and distressed” the force.<\/p>\n

The Department for Correctional Services did not say how long Cruise had been at home, but it later revoked her home detention and confirmed she had been “brought back into custody”.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Stevens told ABC News that while he was “very pleased” the home detention had been overturned, the situation should not have arisen in the first place.<\/p>\n

“I was deeply concerned that a person who had been convicted of the type of offence alleged against Raina Cruise and given a custodial sentence was provided an opportunity to serve a significant part of that sentence on home detention,” he said.<\/p>\n

“To see her being released early would have been received with a great deal of disappointment right across South Australia Police, so to see it corrected is a good thing.<\/p>\n

“I’ve had conversations with the CEO of Corrections and I believe they have mechanisms in place now that will prevent that from happening again.”<\/p>\n

Search continues for Gus<\/p>\n

Asked about the state of the investigation into the disappearance of four-year-old Gus Lamont, the commissioner said there was “not a lot to update”, but said detectives were continuing to consider “further search opportunities”.<\/p>\n

Gus was reported missing from his family’s property, Oak Park Station near Yunta, on September 27 last year.<\/p>\n

In a June interview with Channel Seven, one of the missing boy’s grandmothers, Josie Murray, told the Spotlight program that police believe she may have buried her grandson \u2014 an allegation she denied.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Stevens said he did not “have a view” on the interview.<\/p>\n

“She is entitled to make any statement that she wants publicly. She chose to do that,” he said.<\/p>\n

“That doesn’t alter the course of our investigation.”<\/p>\n

SA governor? ‘Never say never’<\/p>\n

On a lighter note, the commissioner may have inadvertently fanned the flames of speculation he could be in contention for the role of state governor.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year the incumbent, Frances Adamson, revealed she would not renew her tenure beyond October 6.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Stevens said he would treat any suggestion that he could be next in line “as a rumour” only.<\/p>\n

“That’s a matter for government as to the process they will undertake to select the next governor,” he said.<\/p>\n

“No-one in any position of authority has had a conversation with me about that.<\/p>\n

“In my view it’s a rumour and I’ve still got about two years to go on my contract, so I’ll focus on that.”<\/p>\n

But he added that it was wise to “never say never to anything”.<\/p>\n

“I’ve never been a big one for career planning,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the postings I’ve had throughout my career as a police officer, never thought too much about what’s next.<\/p>\n
