{"id":68008,"date":"2026-08-09T02:41:24","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T02:41:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/68008\/"},"modified":"2026-08-09T02:41:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T02:41:24","slug":"gold-coast-light-rail-stage-3-opens-but-public-transport-pain-is-not-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/68008\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold Coast light rail stage 3 opens but public transport pain is not over"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After $1.55 billion and four years of disruptive construction, the Gold Coast&#8217;s latest mass transit system has finally begun taking passengers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Light rail stage 3 has connected the bustling shopping precinct of Broadbeach to the stunning beaches of Burleigh Heads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The state government estimates two million passengers will use the network every month but the light rail has become a symbol of the city&#8217;s struggle to manage population growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Locals know the trams carry big change.<\/p>\n<p>Decades in the making<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Urban planning consultant Ned Wales worked at Gold Coast City Council in the mid-2000s, as detailed planning for light rail began.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Light rail has a dedicated right of way; you get the reliability in terms of timing and scheduling,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[It&#8217;s] not cheap but it&#8217;s certainly been well worth it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man standing in front of a tram smiling.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/c8b93ce2d6fd00ae84f240ed3530f902.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Associate Professor Ned Wales from Bond University. (Supplied: GoldLinQ)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In September 2025, light rail operator GoldLinQ said 48km of utilities had been relocated or upgraded and 137 power poles installed to build 60 per cent of stage 3.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">GoldLinQ chair John Witheriff said <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-19\/gold-coast-light-rail-stage-3-delays-impact-businesses\/105156880\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105156880\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">crews were uncovering decades-old infrastructure<\/a>, including broken asbestos-cement water pipes, adding unexpected delays.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve got no idea what&#8217;s underground in our city and we&#8217;ve got no idea how long the stuff&#8217;s been in there and when it&#8217;s all going to break up,&#8221; he said at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Disruption and reflection<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Those disruptions came at a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-19\/gold-coast-light-rail-stage-3-delays-impact-businesses\/105156880\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105156880\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cost for many businesses along the route<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Jess Firkin relocated his vintage clothing shop from the light rail route in Mermaid Beach south to Miami last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When something happens to you, you&#8217;re very quick to make judgement and point figures,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But that doesn&#8217;t get the bills paid.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man standing in doorway of his shop on the Gold Coast.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/eb2b7b69755b53e8ba6ccdc3b2707b6a.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Jess Firkin at his old shopfront at Mermaid Beach last year, prior to moving. (ABC Gold Coast: Dominic Cansdale)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Locals Raeleigh and Russell Olive said the construction process has been &#8220;a real mess&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The restrictions on getting in and out of Burleigh [are] \u2026 gone and it looks good again,&#8221; Ms Olive said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s one of our favourite places to come, so it&#8217;s nice to know that other people will be enjoying it as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But Mr Olive said &#8220;it would have been a great idea&#8221; to extend the line further south to the airport.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition builds, plans get scrapped<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Light rail was not meant to end with stage 3.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Stage 4 would have connected Burleigh Heads to the airport, described as <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-02-20\/gold-coast-airport-light-rail-laps-melbourne-airport-transport\/104923480\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104923480\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a critical part of the entire network by urban planners<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the cancellation of stage 4 came about after once-sleepy coastal villages along the proposed route became the focus of intense high-rise development.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A map showing two rail stations approximately the same distance from an airport.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/d252a83b4c881b43bd791f45d646824f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The light rail ends at Burleigh Heads, instead of extending further south to the airport, as planned. (Graphic: ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Opposition grew in suburbs such as Palm Beach, where &#8220;Trams Outta Palmy&#8221; signs appeared outside homes and shops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Even <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-05-04\/mick-fanning-voices-opposition-gold-coast-light-rail\/102296788\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/102296788\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">surfing great Mick Fanning voiced his disapproval online.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While he supported stage 4, Mr Wales said &#8220;the downside is gentrification&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Real estate values increase particularly around tram stations,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That may lead to some displacement of those on lower socio-economic incomes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Multiple yellow protest signs saying, &quot;Trams outta Tugun&quot;.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ec9f3cefa069cc77c5d62705cff90f27.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Opposition to light rail on the southern Gold Coast has been vocal, with protests seen here in 2021. (ABC Gold Coast: Dominic Cansdale)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The LNP government <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-01\/queensland-government-dumps-gold-coast-light-rail-stage-four\/105719168\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105719168\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cancelled stage 4<\/a> last year, citing local opposition and an estimated cost of $5.7 billion to $9.8 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But on Friday, Queensland Labor senator Murray Watt said the state had not given the Commonwealth a firm stage 4 business case, making it &#8220;impossible to say exactly what that cost would be&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The state has preserved the light rail corridor along the southern Gold Coast, leaving the door open for a future government to revive the project.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s next?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A network of l<a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-22\/metro-buses-alternative-to-axed-stage-four-light-rail-gold-coast\/106825972\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106825972\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arger buses dubbed the &#8220;GC Surfer&#8221;<\/a> will carry passengers south of Burleigh Heads, but without the dedicated lanes to bypass traffic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The GC Surfer will also link the Gold Coast&#8217;s inland suburbs, including Nerang and Robina, which would not have been feasible with light rail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Those communities sandwiched between light rail and heavy [rail] will now have the opportunity to enjoy both,&#8221; Burleigh MP Hermann Vorster said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Artist graphic of metro style bus on a bridge over water.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/44dffd90e4b95ed667f497ef449c2b35.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">An artist&#8217;s impression has been released, but costs for the &#8220;GC Surfer&#8221; bus are yet to be finalised.
