Now its flagship in Albert Coates Lane at QV is set to triple in size, with the revamped store due to open this winter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-[20px] leading-[1.75rem]\">Co-founder Athan Didaskalou says the expanded address \u201cwill be our last store in Oz\u201d, as the brand plans to open permanent hubs in Singapore and Malaysia by the end of the year. \u201cWhat I want to see is (growth) in international markets,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019ve had Zimmermann, we\u2019ve had Aesop. I\u2019d love for July to be the next big Australian export brand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-[20px] leading-[1.75rem]\">Didaskalou has worked with the same design team for every store from Perth to Brisbane, forming a creative bond with architect Ana \u0106ali\u0107 McLean of In Addition Studio, and builder and former schoolmate Nick Karas from Trust Projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-[20px] leading-[1.75rem]\">\u201cIt\u2019s the architect, builder and client working together with absolute trust and a shared understanding of exactly what we want to do,\u201d Didaskalou says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-[20px] leading-[1.75rem]\">At QV, they\u2019ve taken over the space next door, expanding the shopfront from 80 to 250 square metres. The new footprint will feature three circular rooms, or \u201cchambers\u201d, with different identities, contrasting colours and sculptural finishes, described by In Addition as \u201ca modern interpretation of the piazza defined by geometry, ritual and pause\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-[20px] leading-[1.75rem]\">Sydney-based artist George Raftopoulos has been commissioned to create a series of vibrant canvases mounted on the ceiling. \u201cGeorge does a lot of work about migration and stories of movement and travel, so he\u2019s doing three pieces for each room, Michelangelo-style,\u201d explains Didaskalou. \u201cThough he declined the opportunity to paint upside down \u2013 he\u2019s going to paint it on the ground and we\u2019ll stick it up!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-[20px] leading-[1.75rem]\">The July team, including co-founder Richard Li, firmly believe in the future of bricks-and-mortar retail. \u201cIf you need a suitcase today or tomorrow, Australia Post is not going to get it to you [on that timeline], so retail in this category matters,\u201d says Didaskalou. \u201cNot only do I think physical retail is not going anywhere, as online [products] becomes easier and easier to sell, experiential retail is going to be the game changer between the brands that participate and those that dominate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-[20px] leading-[1.75rem]\">He points to the recent<a target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline cursor-pointer border-b border-current pb-0 transition duration-100 hover:border-dotted\" href=\"https:\/\/www.broadsheet.com.au\/featured\/mecca-bourke-street-opens-melbourne\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> opening of Mecca\u2019s Bourke Street megastore<\/a> as inspiration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-[20px] leading-[1.75rem]\">\u201cYou can buy most of their products online, so why do people still go to Mecca? It\u2019s the experience, it\u2019s being part of something, it\u2019s the conversations you have with staff, it is bigger than the product itself. I hope that when we\u2019re done Mecca is the number one (retail store in Melbourne) and July QV is number two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-[20px] leading-[1.75rem]\">July\u2019s flagship is due to open at 21 Albert Coates Lane this winter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 font-serif text-[20px] leading-[1.75rem]\"><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline cursor-pointer border-b border-current pb-0 transition duration-100 hover:border-dotted\" href=\"https:\/\/july.com\/au\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">july.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Melbourne-based luggage brand \u00a0July has expanded rapidly since launching in 2019, opening 14 locations across the country.
