in memorandum of understanding with SA government

ChatGPT owner OpenAI will help develop skills, drive innovation and attract investment for South Australian start-ups, researchers and businesses looking to tap into the power of artificial intelligence under a new landmark agreement struck with the state government.

As part of a memorandum of understanding signed by Premier Peter Malinauskas and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman at the tech giant’s San Francisco headquarters, the parties will also work together to explore opportunities to improve government services and productivity using AI, including beefing up cybersecurity systems within the public sector.

The agreement is also expected to lead to discussions about potential investment into the state’s AI infrastructure, including data centres.

It comes after the state government in June released its data centre strategy aimed at capitalising on demand for computing power while at the same time addressing concerns around the water and energy supplies needed to run power-hungry data centre infrastructure.

OpenAI vice president of global policy Ann O’Leary said the agreement would build on South Australia’s strengths in innovation, clean energy, advanced industry and education.

“South Australia combines a strong culture of public sector reform with world-class universities, innovative businesses and deep expertise across energy, health, defence, manufacturing, agriculture, space and the creative industries,” she said.

“We look forward to exploring how AI can help turn those strengths into better services, broader opportunity and lasting local capability.”

OpenAI said its support for local start-ups, researchers, universities and businesses could include technical workshops, research collaborations and hackathons – events where computer programmers rapidly work with other experts to develop new software or hardware for a user over a 24 or 48-hour period.

The agreement also paves the way to discussions around potential partnerships between OpenAI and local universities and training providers to improve the AI skills of public servants, educators, workers, small businesses, not-for-profits and community organisations.

It comes eight months after the company, led by tech billionaire Sam Altman, announced a partnership with data centre developer NextDC to build a $7bn data centre in western Sydney.

The project forms part the OpenAI for Australia initiative, designed to “unlock the full economic and societal benefits of artificial intelligence across the country”.

Mr Malinauskas said South Australia was looking to play a leading role.

“South Australia has always been prepared to move early when reform can deliver real benefits for people,” he said.

“This agreement gives us a practical way to explore how AI can improve services, support our workforce and small businesses, strengthen local research and start-ups, and help South Australians participate confidently in the next wave of innovation.”

Read related topics:<a class="topic_tag"
