<\/p>\nUp to 30 vehicles have been forced off the road due to large potholes that have opened along the Princes Freeway at Bunyip in Victoria’s east.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Victorian transport department has warned of Melbourne-bound delays on the freeway as a result of the road damage just before Hope Street.<\/p>\n
Garry, who was driving through the area, has told ABC Melbourne it was carnage, with more than two dozen cars damaged as a result.<\/p>\n
“For about 15 kilometres thereafter, cars were pulled over with damaged rims,” he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“We were shocked, and as you approach, I thought there was a major accident.<\/p>\n
“The highway has just fallen apart. I reckon there was probably 30 cars pulled over.”<\/p>\n

Admiral Towing operator David Gridley said he knew of at least 30 vehicles that had suffered flat or blown tyres.<\/p>\n
“There’s just multiple very large potholes that when they’re full of water, they’re just impossible to see,” he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n
“The holes are that deep that they’re just destroying the tyres.<\/p>\n
“It’s happened once before where we’ve had a series of potholes that have caused a major issue for weeks, and it’s just happening again.”<\/p>\n
He blamed the problem on a failure to properly maintain roads.<\/p>\n
“The roads, they’re not getting repaired properly. We’re getting patch jobs and the patches are just removing themselves in the weather,” Mr Gridley said.<\/p>\n
The department issued its warnings shortly after 7am and by 10am, most vehicles had been repaired or towed.<\/p>\n
At nearby Warragul, the Bureau of Meteorology has recorded about 15 millimetres of rain since last night.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In November, more than 20 cars were damaged<\/a> when they struck a large pothole on the Princes Freeway at Nar Nar Goon.<\/p>\n
