The NRL has rejected a report that the Perth Bears will start their foundation season with less funding than the 17 established clubs.<\/p>\n
The base salary cap will be $12.1 million next year, with established clubs to receive an extra $5 million in grants.<\/p>\n
The NRL on Sunday guaranteed any shortfall in funding would be covered.<\/p>\n
The WA government will provide $65.6 million over seven years, comprising $35 million for grassroots funding, $5.6 million in match day support and marketing and $25 million to help establish the club.<\/p>\n
The Bears will also receive a salary cap concession that will allow the club to provide a 20 per cent top up to a marquee player via an existing sponsor.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Perth Bears will have the same access to club funding as all other clubs,\u201d an NRL spokesperson said in relation to The Sunday Telegraph report.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Bears will have the ability to spend on administration and the football department like all other clubs.<\/p>\n
\u201cFurther they will work within the confines of the same salary cap, notwithstanding the additional favourable concessions given to the Perth Bears which was announced in recent days.<\/p>\n
\u201cAccordingly they have as much funding as any other club for players, their football department and administration.\u201d<\/p>\n
Perth Bears chairman Ben Morton said he was happy with the arrangement.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fact is that the NRL guarantees and thereby takes the risk on any potential shortfall on football department costs for the Perth Bears.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the case even if the shortfall would be more than $5 million and higher than other NRL clubs.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhatever the difference is, the NRL covers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Perth Bears will spend just as much as every other NRL club on football administration under this scenario.<\/p>\n
