Australians are being warned to stay vigilant of scammers trying to trick them into sharing personal details ahead of census night.<\/p>\n
The census will take place on Tuesday August 11 and major telcos are warning customers to stay wary of scammers attempting to access personal data and financial information.<\/p>\n
The census will not require sharing personal financial details and the Australian Bureau of Statistics will not ask for remote access to your personal computer or ask for entry into your home.<\/p>\n
Australian Telecommunications Alliance chief executive Luke Coleman said \u201cscammers often use official activities such as the census or telecommunications crews working in the area to try to legitimise their illegal activities.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFor them it\u2019s a numbers game. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey may make hundreds of calls, send out thousands of fake messages, or even knock on your door.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt only takes a few people to fall for their scam for it to be very lucrative for them.\u201d<\/p>\n
To stay secure, do not respond to any SMS messages or click on any links that say they are being sent from the ABS.<\/p>\n
Aussies are also being urged to hang up the phone if they receive a call from someone purporting to be an ABS or census representative.<\/p>\n

Most households have received information in their mailbox with instructions on how to complete the census online, using a unique census number, or by returning a hard copy form.
