{"id":69096,"date":"2026-08-10T20:30:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-10T20:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/69096\/"},"modified":"2026-08-10T20:30:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T20:30:12","slug":"tiny-single-celled-organisms-are-responsible-for-spectacular-marine-lightshows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/69096\/","title":{"rendered":"Tiny single-celled organisms are responsible for spectacular marine lightshows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Don&#8217;t panic if you see an electric-blue flash next time you&#8217;re dipping your toes at the local swimming spot, it&#8217;s just bioluminescence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Videos showing the phenomenon, which appears as a blue glow in the water when it&#8217;s disturbed, were posted over the weekend, taken at boat ramps around Brisbane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Queensland doesn&#8217;t see bioluminescence as much as New South Wales, or Tasmania in recent years, but when conditions are right it can be spectacular.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Bioluminescence refers to a glow released by chemical reactions taking place within a tiny marine species of dinoflagellates, Noctiluca scintillans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">These minute unicellular creatures \u2014 also known as sea sparkles \u2014 feed on diatoms, algae even more microscopic than they are, and use photosynthesis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;A little bit unusual&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Griffith University Australian Rivers Institute Professor Michele Burford said while bioluminescence is a trait of many marine species, the blooms seen in Brisbane were caused by species of dinoflagellates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They produce this bioluminescence in response to some sort of threat or movement of water that causes them to do this chemical stimulation of a light pulse,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They&#8217;re tiny little things, but because they can gather together in blooms or form concentrations near the water&#8217;s edge, that&#8217;s when you see that luminescence, which looks like one thing but is actually a whole lot of tiny little organisms all lighting up at the same time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Microscopic view of a unicellular life-form.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3a1973fe670dce899177781543e68e91.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The unicellular Noctiluca scintillans \u2014 also known as sea sparkles \u2014 are responsible for creating blooms of bioluminescence. (Wikimedia Commons: Nadine Neaud-Masson)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The dinoflagellates, like most plants, absorb nutrients from their environment and photosynthesise energy from sunlight, but Professor Burford said it was slightly more complicated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The thing about dinoflagellates, they&#8217;re a little bit unusual. They&#8217;re kind of halfway between an animal and a plant in the way that they work in the natural environment,&#8221;  she said.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-11-26\/glow-in-the-dark-marsupials-surprise-scientists-biofluorescence\/12910820\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Glow-in-the-dark wombats<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Australian scientists are surprised to learn that many animals glow under UV light, though more research is required to discover why.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Bioluminescence is not uncommon in the natural world, according to marine ecology expert and senior lecturer at Griffith University, Vincent Raoult.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They go from really small organisms like the phytoplankton to slightly larger ones like little marine zooplankton, like copepods which are a tiny crustacean, all the way up to very large organisms such as squid, and even some shark species bioluminesce.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Raoult said it wasn&#8217;t clear yet why the organisms flash their lights, and there were a lot of potential explanations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;One of them is communication, and that can be communication with other organisms \u2026 in the form of a warning, or it can be in the form of telling other organisms to be aware that they&#8217;re there,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Blue algae glow on the coastline\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/aee06cfa2558fa1b1526632d00e892ed.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Bioluminescence has been increasing in Tasmania, which experts say could be due to climate change. (Supplied: Hayley Cox)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Try to pick a particularly dark night, as a bright moon can really take the edge off that neon-blue glow, and get to the location a couple of hours after sunset.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In Brisbane at least, we tend to see it in the winter months,&#8221; Professor Burford said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There are some known hotspots in south-east Queensland with potential for the phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Professor Burford said the lower Brisbane River especially can have blooms in the winter months, &#8220;so it isn&#8217;t a bad place to go on a calm winter&#8217;s night&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But to a degree, there&#8217;s an element of luck. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don&#8217;t,&#8221;  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Bioluminescence is generally not an indicator of an unhealthy waterway, Professor Burford said, and Dr Raoult agreed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In general, it&#8217;s perfectly safe.
