The Daily Telegraph revealed <\/a>George Dib, 42, was arrested on Thursday night last week after he was targetted in a major operation.<\/p>\nThat operation was led by Lebanese Internal Security Forces with intelligence support from the AFP\u2019s Beirut post under Operation Gain.<\/p>\n
The AFP said Dib has been suspected of spending the last 11 years brokering and organising multiple drug shipments to Australia on behalf of other criminal syndicates from around the world.<\/p>\n
Dib\u2019s family owns Australia\u2019s largest independent petrol station company, Metro Petroleum, and are regular features on national rich lists with an estimated wealth of close to $700 million.<\/p>\n
Dib\u2019s father John founded the petrol giant and runs it alongside his brother George Snr, as part of the \u201cDib Group\u201d.<\/p>\n
There is no suggestion of any involvement in criminal activity by John, George Snr or any other member of the Dib family.<\/p>\n
Dib was one of two men with prominent links to Sydney\u2019s underworld arrested last week by Lebanese police.<\/p>\n
High-profile figure Fawaz \u201cFuzz\u201d Elmir was detained in the sweeping crackdown.<\/p>\n
Elmir has been wanted by NSW Police for a decade over what they describe as his alleged role in the shooting death of Safwan Charbaji at a smash repair shop at Condell Park in 2016.<\/p>\n
Police say that shooting sparked a bloody war between the Elmir clan and another prominent Sydney crime family, the Ahmads.<\/p>\n
Soon after Charbaji\u2019s death Elmir left Australia illegally with authorities believing he was smuggled out in a shipping container on a cargo ship.<\/p>\n
He has been believed to be hiding out in Lebanon ever since.<\/p>\n
