\u201cThey need to address the issues that are created by the wildly popular metros that people are loving, but we have to address the backlog, the queues, the lack of planning around them.<\/p>\n
\u201cLabor needs a long-term plan to keep pace with demand, but in the meantime it should introduce loop bus services to help frustrated drivers across Sydney\u2019s west, southwest and northwest.\u201d<\/p>\n
Inadequate planning has already plagued the planned 2100-space carpark at Tallawong Metro Station – with council data revealing that demand has already reached 2400 spots a day before construction on the carpark has even begun. <\/p>\n
The three-level Park&Ride at Ashfield Station was only erected in 2018, and promised to account for 15 per cent patronage growth to 2036 – but residents say it\u2019s already insufficient regularly full before 7.30am.<\/p>\n
Commuter Isobel Gallego, 37, said she regularly parked illegally at Ashfield when the facility becomes full, and previously received a fine because she had no option but to be on time for work.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt fills up insanely,\u201d she said. \u201cI have these issues with my husband, because I am telling him: \u2018I need to leave now otherwise I won\u2019t get a spot and I don\u2019t want to get another fine\u2018\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen it fills up people start parking where possible, without affecting the traffic\u201d.<\/p>\n
Ms Gallego travels 20 minutes from the neighbouring suburb, Roselands, to take a direct train to Parramatta, where she works. <\/p>\n
She said it was frustrating to stress about getting a carpark, and would appreciate a better maintained commuter carpark as a growing homeless encampment is taking spots. <\/p>\n
\u201cIf there were more spaces that would be amazing and convenient\u201d.<\/p>\n
Lousia Defranti, 55, and her daughter, Josie Kilham, 17, said unreliable bus services and a 20 minute walk in the early morning dark force them to use the commuter carpark. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey might need a couple more levels because it\u2019s not enough (and) to some degree, if they build more, it\u2019ll just get filled up\u201d.<\/p>\n
NSW Transport Minister John Graham acknowledged that parking availability was a major concern for commuters in certain areas, and noted the worst shortage was was Tallawong.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt really depends on the area of Sydney you\u2019re coming from,\u201d Mr Graham said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSince coming to office we\u2019ve added more than 1800 car spaces at rail stations, and planning is underway to add over 2000 more.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn addition to car spaces, our bus services, cycling and walking infrastructure and our housing policies are all geared towards making rail transport as convenient as possible.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve added almost 6000 new weekly bus services since coming to office, many of which connect passengers with metro and train
