{"id":7030,"date":"2026-05-08T00:32:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T00:32:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/7030\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T00:32:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T00:32:16","slug":"labors-absence-in-farrer-by-election-could-reshape-poll-outcome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/7030\/","title":{"rendered":"Labor&#8217;s absence in Farrer by-election could reshape poll outcome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A lifetime Labor voter says he will back One Nation at the Farrer by-election, after Labor&#8217;s decision not to field a candidate left him reassessing his vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Albury resident Nico Mathews has a long history with the Australian Labor Party (ALP), rooted in what he describes as a family tradition of working-class politics and campaign involvement spanning generations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Mathews stood as the Labor candidate in Farrer in the 2001 federal election, the same year former Liberal MP Sussan Ley won the seat for the first time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I finished third. (ABC News: Nicola Ceccato)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Mathews said he was &#8220;pissed off&#8221; with the major political parties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Labor, the Liberal Party, National Party and the Greens because they&#8217;ve all, over the years, taken a little bit here and a little bit there and we are getting less and less,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am not going to hide. (ABC News: Greg Ryan)<\/p>\n<p>Labor&#8217;s no-show &#8216;not surprising&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Kieran Drabsch stood as Labor&#8217;s candidate for Farrer at the 2019 election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I honestly believed the ALP was the best to support working and middle class,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Drabsch joined the ALP in 2010 but resigned in January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I was disappointed with the federal government and especially the PM&#8217;s response to the attack at Bondi,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I think the inability to name the core reason for the terrorism attack and deflection to address the underlying cause of the terrorism is a tragedy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I also disagree with, at a state and federal level, the Labor government criminalising forms of speech and forms of expression.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"man and woman standing behind a barbeque\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/8afb1c2028c83f48720280638c47b3ff.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Kieran Drabsch stood for Farrer as an ALP candidate in the 2019 election.\u00a0 (Supplied: Kieran Drabsch)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The former Griffith-based local, who now lives on the Central Coast, said by-elections were an opportunity for voters to send a clear message to the major parties.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Liberals didn&#8217;t invest in the seat for 30 years. With all due respect to the former member, the Liberals did not effectively invest in the infrastructure of Farrer,&#8221;  Mr Drabsch said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They didn&#8217;t resolve the underlying water issues inherent to the Murray-Darling Basin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Drabsch said Labor&#8217;s decision not to field a candidate was disappointing but unsurprising.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It reflects the death of the Labor Party in rural and regional communities,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In practice their branches are dying, and young people aren&#8217;t turning to Labor as a legitimate political option.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Labor has let down rural and regional Australia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Would Labor preferences have made a difference?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australian National University associate professor of politics Jill Sheppard said if Labor had run a candidate, it may have been able to direct preferences to independent candidate Michelle Milthorpe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;What&#8217;s happened here is that the Liberals and Nationals have run candidates, but in the last week or so basically vacated the field to the One Nation candidate,&#8221; Dr Sheppard said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They&#8217;ve said that they would be explicitly happier with the One Nation candidate than with the independent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said it was not unusual for Labor not to run a candidate in a by-election it knew it was unlikely to win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s usually seen as a good way to save money, resources, and not draw down on your volunteers&#8217; free time,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A profile image of a woman with short red hair, wearing a dark top and light jacket.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/742e8cc812071aa1e21c5dc9e20e0b85.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Jill Sheppard says the major parties are not &#8220;reading the room&#8221; when it comes to how voters are feeling.
