One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce has come out defending his populist party as \u201cone of the gayest parties in Australia\u201d after footage emerged of a former candidate claiming gay people have a mental illness.<\/p>\n
Former candidate Parminder Singh failed in his bid to secure a seat for One Nation in Western Australia\u2019s Legislative Council last year.<\/p>\n
Footage has now emerged of Mr Singh in a sit down interview with Perth comedian Jasky Singh, also known by his online persona Mr Sikkant, claiming animals were smarter than humans because they were not gay.<\/p>\n
The One Nation hopeful said in the video that women who tried woman never went back to men.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey don\u2019t go back because they think the man is using them,\u201d he is heard saying in the clip<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is different type of enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Sikkant asks the One Nation candidate if he thought people were born gay.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, no. It\u2019s a mental illness,\u201d he responds.<\/p>\n
Mr Joyce told ABC\u2019s Afternoon Briefing they had a large proportion of gay people in their party and a comment like that was highly offensive.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t want to say it, but I think we\u2019re one of the gayest parties in Australia,\u201d he told ABC\u2019s Afternoon Briefing.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have quite a large proportion of gay people, and they\u2019re all the same. They don\u2019t want to be glorified. They don\u2019t want to be vilified. They just want people to accept, and they go on and do a very good job.\u201d<\/p>\n
He did not confirm if Mr Singh had been disendorsed from One Nation, but said his profile had been removed from the One Nation website on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is not a good sign to be pulled off the website \u2026 if you pull someone off a website it is a pretty strong statement,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Mr Joyce said people\u2019s views had to be within the Australian guardrails of a modern society.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf that culture bleeds an inappropriate comment that is outside the guardrails of Australia, and that\u2019s why I believe in the Australian culture, which says \u2018no, we don\u2019t concur with views like that.\u2019 <\/p>\n
\u201cPeople have views, of course, but they\u2019ve got to be within the Australian guardrails. <\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s one of our key policies, we believe in an Australian culture that is tolerant, egalitarian, and has things that are inside the guardrails.\u201d
Labor MP Patrick Gorman said homophobia has no place in Australia.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese views from a senior One Nation member are deeply offensive,\u201d he said in social media post..<\/p>\n
\u201cI completely reject them. I reject the hate and discrimination that they seek to spread.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Gorman said Australians were welcoming people who celebrated one another.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Perth electorate has been home to the Pride Parade since 1990 (and) I have joined the march many times,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a celebration of the kind and welcoming community we are.\u201d<\/p>\n
