{"id":70962,"date":"2026-08-13T06:04:41","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T06:04:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/70962\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T06:04:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T06:04:41","slug":"james-morrow-oh-lord-reality-check-on-euro-square-vision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/70962\/","title":{"rendered":"James Morrow: Oh Lord \u2013 reality check on \u2018Euro square\u2019 vision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore has released images of how she imagines her $150 million Town Hall Square project might look when completed, but crucially left out details like political protests, homeless encampments, and ibises.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailytelegraph.com.au\/newslocal\/central-sydney\/city-of-sydney-reveals-plan-for-controversial-150m-town-hall-square-project\/news-story\/e18a19359d5c6e18ed51bad41bbde039\" title=\"www.dailytelegraph.com.au\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"e18a19359d5c6e18ed51bad41bbde039\" data-tgev-label=\"newslocal\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instead, architectural renders released by her office promise what have been described as \u201cthe grandeur of a European square\u201d with water features and native Australian trees.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Therefore, in the interest of getting a more realistic vision of what the square might look like, The Daily Telegraph used AI technology to imagine the square complete as it might look with these features \u2013 including protests about Aboriginal rights, Palestine, and generic anger in general.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Sydney had originally envisioned the square being a site for protests, something Moore acknowledged at a press conference Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a democratic right for people to gather together to express their views about things, and of course we support that,\u201d she said. \u201cI know police have said though when there\u2019s a bigger space it\u2019s much easier for them to see what\u2019s happening and control it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Moore\u2019s office has also come under for allowing homeless encampments to form at the Queen Victoria Building and in Martin Place in Sydney under her watch.<\/p>\n<p>Business leaders and economists have already slammed the development as a \u201cpretty paved patio\u201d that will devastate one of Sydney\u2019s busiest retail precincts.<\/p>\n<p>But the Lord Mayor said residents will have an opportunity to provide feedback in the \u201ccoming months\u201d when the development application is lodged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe design is tailored to our environment and culture and will be a uniquely Sydney square \u2013 a contemporary public space, with circular paving patterns and water elements that connect seamlessly with adjacent historic buildings and George St,\u201d Cr Moore said.<\/p>\n<p>JPW is the lead design consultant and architect for the project, working alongside ASPECT Studios as landscape architects.<\/p>\n<p>ASPECT global design director Sacha Coles said: \u201cThe square has been designed with climate change in mind with 50 per cent of the site benefiting from the cover of trees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Council has allocated $150 million for the square\u2019s design, demolition and construction, which critics claim is grossly underestimated.
