{"id":7143,"date":"2026-05-08T02:59:06","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T02:59:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/7143\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T02:59:06","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T02:59:06","slug":"perth-zoo-giraffe-habitat-to-triple-in-size-and-animals-to-roam-together-as-part-of-20m-upgrades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/7143\/","title":{"rendered":"Perth Zoo: Giraffe habitat to triple in size and animals to roam together as part of $20m upgrades"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\"><a class=\"css-445i33-StyledTextLink ezegcyi0\" data-link-type=\"article-inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/perthzoo.wa.gov.au\/\">Perth Zoo<\/a>\u2019s African savannah is set for its biggest transformation in more than 30 years, with the State Government revealing a $20 million expansion that will triple the size of the popular giraffe and zebra habitat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The redevelopment, announced as part of the zoo\u2019s master plan 2040, will create a larger open habitat designed to improve animal welfare and allow for mixed-species living.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\"><a class=\"css-445i33-StyledTextLink ezegcyi0\" data-link-type=\"article-inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/perthzoo.wa.gov.au\/futurezoo\">Master plan<\/a> projects include an orangutan rainforest precinct, a conservation science precinct, an African savannah extension, a nocturnal house and an Australian bushwalk and rainforest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The African savannah has been one of the zoo\u2019s most popular attractions for the past 30 years, taking visitors through an immersive dry riverbed landscape lined with African plants and featuring animals including rhinoceros, lions and meerkats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Under the expansion plans, giraffes and zebras will roam together in a much larger habitat, and it is hoped they will one day be joined by ostriches and antelopes, creating a more natural African savannah environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The project will also include an expanded meerkat habitat, as well as a new children\u2019s playground featuring exploratory tunnels designed to mirror the animals\u2019 underground burrows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">A new visitor hub is also planned as part of the redevelopment, increasing the zoo\u2019s education offerings and visitor amenities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The expansion forms part of Perth Zoo\u2019s long-term vision to modernise its facilities and deliver world-class exhibits focused on conservation, education, and animal welfare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Construction is expected to begin in 2028.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Further details will be released as planning progresses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Perth Zoo\u2019s African savannah is set for its biggest transformation in more than 30 years, with the State&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":7144,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[917,335,1961,464],"class_list":{"0":"post-7143","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-perth","8":"tag-central","9":"tag-perth","10":"tag-southern","11":"tag-wa-news"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7143","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7143"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7143\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/7144"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7143"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7143"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7143"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
