at major airports with delays and cancellations across Sydney, Perth and Melbourne

Three airports across Australia can expect delays on Tuesday, but travellers in one city are facing an average wait for their flights of almost an hour.

Perth, Sydney and Melbourne airports are all set to experience delays, but to varying degrees, according to Airservices Australia’s Daily Plan.

After a weekend of chaos, Sydney will face lengthy delays and even cancellations on Tuesday.

Kingsford Smith airport is predicted to have 138 affected flights, lower than Perth and Melbourne.

But travellers in Sydney can expect a cumulative delay of 5,989 minutes, or an average of 43 minutes.

Perth and Melbourne will have more flights affected by delays, but with far shorter average wait times.

Melbourne’s 198 affected flights will have an average delay of 20 minutes, while Perth’s 201 affected flights will have an average delay of 11 minutes.

Sydney’s chaos is caused by winds in the early morning which are expected to ease up later in the day.

The airport has already seen eight flights cancelled, all of which are interstate flights.

The “moderate” winds are predicted to come across the runways, causing crosswinds.

For Melbourne, aircraft will need to be kept further apart than normal, due to weather, which may affect scheduling, according to Airservices Australia.

Melbourne will see showers and low clouds in the morning, along with winds later in the day.

One of Melbourne’s runways has also been closed for maintenance.

Airservices Australia is urging travellers to check their flights ahead for any delays or cancellations.

<img decoding="async" class="poster-img" src="https://www.europesays.com/australia/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/5963ff327ebbcba0afb53a62bc7d64c1.jpeg" their flight with their airline before travelling to the airport,” Airservices said.

“We thank passengers for their patience and understanding.”

Tuesday’s delays and cancellations come after a weekend of concern for Sydney Airport, after two planes almost collided with one another.

On Sunday, a Jetstar aircraft and Qatar Airways plane came within 50 metres of each other.

Airservices Australia CEO Rob Sharp apologised to travellers for the near collision.

“The Australian travelling public expects reliable services and we’ve not met that, and we sincerely apologise for not meeting those expectations,” he said.

Read related topics:<a class="topic_tag"
