{"id":71862,"date":"2026-08-14T07:10:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T07:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/71862\/"},"modified":"2026-08-14T07:10:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T07:10:13","slug":"wa-premier-roger-cook-lashes-east-coast-clowns-over-interim-productivity-commission-gst-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/71862\/","title":{"rendered":"WA Premier Roger Cook lashes &#8216;east-coast clowns&#8217; over interim Productivity Commission GST report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">An angry Roger Cook has lashed as &#8220;east-coast clowns&#8221; the people who authored an explosive report into GST distribution and branded it an &#8220;attack&#8221; on Western Australians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Western Australia was the only state or territory to benefit from 2018 changes to how the goods and services tax is carved up, according to a new <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/107038112\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Productivity Commission interim report into the reforms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The GST distribution is supposed to help each state and territory provide services and infrastructure to the same standard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;However, as a result of the [2018] reforms, Western Australia received enough GST revenue to meet 113 per cent of its assessed fiscal needs in 2024-25 \u2014 compared with 98 per cent for all other states,&#8221; the interim report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">However, the federal government tops up the remaining 2 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Premier Roger Cook said any changes to the GST distribution would unfairly punish WA for its success &#8220;simply to prop up other lazy states&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Skyscrapers in the background with the Swan River in the middle and two bicycle riders in the foreground.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/b5b80976f5c4d3ced7d1858f98bb6831.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The WA premier argued that Western Australia and its mining industry prop up the rest of the country. (ABC News: Benjamin Gubana)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said the Productivity Commission&#8217;s report was &#8220;an attack on every hard working Western Australian&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a sign that these east-coast clowns simply do not understand Western Australia, they have no Western Australian representative, and no idea,&#8221;  Mr Cook said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The report said WA&#8217;s mining boom drove up the state&#8217;s ability to fund itself, meaning it received less GST, while the GST formula also meant WA was caught short during times of volatility, for example when mining royalties fell after the global financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This produced a sentiment among many Western Australians that the state was &#8216;losing&#8217; its revenue,&#8221; the commission&#8217;s interim report said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Picture of Australian one dollar coins stacked on top of note currency\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1786691408_618_11f4b1f035906b6e831d7fa8bb1bb357.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The interim report found WA had more money than was needed as part of the deal.
