Trains will operate on schedule this morning after overhead wiring issues caused widespread delays across Sydney’s network last night.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of people were assisted off trains after overhead wires came down onto one of them yesterday evening.<\/p>\n

Significant delays across Sydney’s rail network continued into the night.<\/p>\n

Sydney Trains chief executive Matt Longland said all six lines were now open.<\/p>\n

“I want to apologise to passengers who were impacted by delays on the rail network in Sydney on Friday night,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Teams have worked right through the night last night and all six lines through the area are now fully reopened with normal weekend services operating, but a reminder that track work is in place in Western Sydney today.<\/p>\n

“We’ll be investigating the root cause of the incident throughout the weekend.”<\/p>\n

Passengers using trains this weekend are being advised that planned track work is continuing today, with changes to parts of the T2, T4, T5, Blue Mountains and South Coast lines.<\/p>\n

About 4:30pm yesterday, the South Coast Line service was travelling between Redfern and Erskineville, in Sydney’s inner west, when the wires came down.<\/p>\n

Two other nearby trains came to a grinding halt.<\/p>\n

Transport authorities isolated power to safely remove passengers.<\/p>\n

Just before 7pm last night, some commuters were still being assisted off, but everyone had been cleared by 8pm.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Sydney Trains’ head of rail operations, Jas Tumber, said the cause of the wiring issue was unknown.<\/p>\n

“This is a really significant disruption that’s causing really wide ripple effects,” he said.<\/p>\n

Train passenger Sean Murphy said he left Redfern for Sutherland on the Kiama train about 4:30pm and that “the engine just stopped” five minutes later.<\/p>\n

“The train just went basically dead,” he said.<\/p>\n
