(Supplied: John Oxley Library)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The building is unlike any other in the town, with its distinctive rounded spotter&#8217;s tower and even the occasional ghost story to hold the town&#8217;s imagination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Gympie firefighters moved to newer premises earlier this year, far better suited to their modern trucks and equipment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) has confirmed it is &#8220;exploring options&#8221; to offload the old site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But residents and historians say while the building&#8217;s future is unclear, it is too important to be lost to progress or development.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A big cost for a country at war<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Gympie Fire Station was a controversial project, built in the first years of World War II for 6,800 pounds ($710,000 in 2025 terms), a seemingly great deal, paid for by the council, government and insurance companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A newspaper report after its opening hinted at the frustration over the cost.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Close up of decorative feature on building\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5a6133af809b78ee9ba9d9bdeb0fe8a6.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The fire station has Art Deco flourishes unique in the former gold-mining town. (ABC News: Owen Jacques)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The then minister for health and home affairs, Ned Hanlon, who would become Queensland&#8217;s premier in the years following, said the government&#8217;s policy was to &#8220;build well and build truly&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">By the time it was vacated earlier this year, it had become the state&#8217;s oldest, still-operational station.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Despite its impressive presence, a tragedy in its first years of operation would become an inescapable part of its history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In March 1943, 20-year-old Kevin James Bennetts fell from the spotter&#8217;s tower and died the following day in hospital.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Gympie fire station front view 2026\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/e7b371a3eafbf1c6ac671276b777f22e.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Despite some changes, eventually the size of vehicles became too big for the aging building. (Supplied: Jack Carr)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The QFD did not grant access into the building, but in his application, Mr Carr said the first floor of the building retained &#8220;all of the original 1940 rooms&#8221;, along with lead-light French doors, fittings and cornices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The spotter&#8217;s tower now has a roof and is glassed-in, and there is an extension on one side, but the original building remains intact.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I personally would like to see either a business or a community-inspired centre go into this so the public can appreciate it,&#8221;  Mr Carr said.A view from the inside<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Gympie station officer Cameron Nicol spent close to 20 years in the building, having arrived from Mount Isa in 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said there was no doubt it was a &#8220;grand old building&#8221;, but it was no longer the right place for modern firefighters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Certainly, time has passed it by in terms of its suitability for current-day firefighters, mainly the size of the trucks,&#8221;  Mr Nicol said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The trucks have gotten bigger, and unfortunately it got to the point where we could barely fit our fire trucks in there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a pretty unique building \u2026 Try furnishing a round room.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"High view of tower looking over town\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/b56dc1f6b94c2348772b1a24201eb446.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The tower of the fire station was eventually covered and glassed-in, and provides some of the best views of the town.
