(Supplied: Laura Crick)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In early 2023, Gaye was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer.\u202f<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">From the middle of last year, the cancer progressed rapidly, causing her constant pain and robbing her of her quality of life.\u202f<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-03-13\/voluntary-assisted-dying-in-tasmania-phil-laing-last-day\/102087180\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phil was able to plan his last day<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">As one of the first Tasmanians to access the state&#8217;s voluntary assisted dying scheme, Phil\u00a0Laing was able to spend his last day at his own home, drinking champagne with his closest\u00a0family and friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last October, Gaye died after accessing voluntary assisted dying (VAD).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Those initial conversations [about VAD] were really difficult and confronting,&#8221; Laura said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But once she had the approval in place, it gave her a great sense of relief and agency in a situation where she had none.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Gaye Crick stands on a walk way with a castle in the background.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/aa40383fb1254d8ea2bed8627d2dd436.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Gaye Crick had a passion for travel. (Supplied: Laura Crick)<\/p>\n<p>Requests, assisted deaths increase<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tasmania&#8217;s voluntary assisted dying <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-10-23\/tasmania-voluntary-assisted-dying-laws-come-into-effect\/101550264\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/101550264\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">laws came into effect in 2022.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Since then, demand for VAD has increased significantly.\u202f<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The VAD Commission&#8217;s latest annual report showed a 71 per cent increase in the number of first requests made to the regulatory body in 2024-25.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There were 109 reported voluntary assisted deaths, a 73 per cent increase on the year before.<\/p>\n<p>Independent review underway<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">An independent review into Tasmania&#8217;s VAD legislation is currently underway to assess if it is still working as intended, and what improvements are needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It is being led by three experts \u2014 lawyer and former governor Kate Warner, end-of-life law expert Ben White, and palliative care specialist Michael Ashby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A final report will be handed to the government by November 1.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with dark brown hair pulled back sits on a balcony overlooking the city of hobart\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/b0f85e457815a489c4fe9198ed8a8eb7.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Meg Creely says the administrative and financial burden on doctors needs to be addressed. Here&#8217;s how the laws will work.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Tasmanian branch of the Australian Medical Association contributed to the review.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">President Meg Creely said that, overwhelmingly, medical practitioners involved with VAD found it &#8220;a really rewarding part of their medical career&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">However, she said there was an administrative and financial burden on doctors that needed to be addressed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;What we hear from our members is that legal access and practical access are not necessarily the same thing,&#8221; Dr Creely said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The way the system&#8217;s currently set up relies a lot on unpaid overtime of unrecognised work done by the health professionals involved.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with dark brown hair pulled back sits on a balcony overlooking the city of hobart\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/53577e21ce58d7dfc882460bebedbf72.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tasmania&#8217;s VAD laws are being reviewed. (ABC News: Kate Nickels)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In its annual report, the VAD Commission recommended better utilisation of semi-retired medical practitioners:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Many practitioners approaching retirement have suggested that they would be interested in working [in VAD] on a part-time basis after leaving private practice but that that the costs of maintaining registration as a medical practitioner and professional indemnity insurance, along with the time commitments required to keep up to date with continuing professional development requirements render this untenable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The state government has previously committed to implementing an online portal to streamline the necessary paperwork filed by practitioners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The health department said it expected the portal would be fully implemented by early next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It said the VAD Commission &#8220;continues to recommend that the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) be reformed&#8221; to establish &#8220;voluntary assisted dying specific MBS items&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;VAD practitioners have repeatedly referred to the rewarding nature of their voluntary assisted dying work,&#8221; a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Work is underway to develop a workforce plan for medical staffing needs.&#8221;Telehealth changes needed, AMA says<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Creely said the AMA also supported patients being able to access VAD through telehealth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-04-28\/telehealth-ban-voluntary-assisted-dying-appeal-for-change\/106268900\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Push to make telehealth available for assisted dying patients<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Despite voluntary assisted dying being legal in Victoria, many regional patients are not getting the same end-of-life care.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A provision in the Commonwealth Criminal Code prevents doctors from using phone, video or email to discuss VAD with patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It has been the subject of national debate, with<a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-11\/regional-vad-dying-woman-using-final-days-to-lobby-pm\/107010688\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107010688\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> attempts made in federal parliament this week to change it.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We very much don&#8217;t want to see the region somebody lives in be a reason that there is a difference in their ability to access care,&#8221; Dr Creely said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tasmania&#8217;s VAD Commission has repeatedly recommended the Criminal Code be amended to remove the limitation on providing VAD information by way of a carriage service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tasmanian health minister Bridget Archer said the state government also supported this.<\/p>\n<p>Enduring pride over legislation<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Independent MLC Mike Gaffney <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-03-23\/tasmania-passes-assisted-dying-legislation\/100024852\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/100024852\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">introduced Tasmania&#8217;s VAD legislation into state parliament.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said while he had always been proud of that, it was important the legislation be reviewed three years in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are legislative issues that we can improve on, and there&#8217;s probably implementation of the legislation that can be improved.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mike Gaffney sitting in his office speaking to a reporter\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/b9f975d4a656b6b2c165b8da734ed132.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mike Gaffney says the review is an important chance to see how the VAD laws can be improved.
