Image credit: Ayesha\/stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>UNSW Sydney is bringing more than 30 hands-on experiments, demonstrations and science activities to Sydney parklands as part of National Science Week, with free events planned at Centennial Park and Western Sydney Parklands this month.<\/p>\n<p>Science in the Swamp was held at Centennial Park on 16 August, while Science in the Scrub is scheduled for 23 August at Western Sydney Parklands. <\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/newshub.medianet.com.au\/2026\/08\/unsw-turns-sydney-into-giant-open-air-lab-for-national-science-week\/166565\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">news release, <\/a>UNSW said the events are expected to attract up to 20,000 people and are designed to give visitors direct exposure to scientific research.<\/p>\n<p>Activities include forensic investigations using animal skulls, slime experiments, magnetic levitation demonstrations and activities exploring cells, molecules and human bones. Visitors can also take part in a science scavenger hunt and explore the intersection of chemistry and Minecraft.<\/p>\n<p>UNSW engineers will showcase the Makerbus, a mobile workshop equipped with lasers, 3D printers and other technology, with activities focused on coding, creating and flying.<\/p>\n<p>AI researcher Dr James Dunn will also be available for demonstrations involving facial recognition and human-AI interaction, while other UNSW researchers will discuss topics including waste, materials science, physics and the question of who owns the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Sven Rogge, Dean of UNSW Science, said the events were intended to make scientific research more accessible to the wider community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese events are a chance to bring science out into the community, showcase the diversity of science happening at UNSW and encourage young people from all backgrounds to see a place for themselves in the future of science, innovation and discovery,\u201d Professor Rogge said.<\/p>\n<p>UNSW said scientists and demonstrations would be available for filming and interviews at both events, covering areas including wildlife, forensic science, physics and engineering technology.<\/p>\n<p>The university said the activities are intended to allow families to meet working scientists and engage directly with research being conducted across UNSW.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Stock image.
