Western Australia had received from a 2018 GST deal, opposed by every other state and territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At the time, she was arguing that the North-West Shelf gas development off WA should be included in a future gas reservation scheme, when she strayed into dicey territory with the GST carve-up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-14\/albanese-and-chalmers-given-escape-plan-from-costly-wa-gst-deal\/107038112\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Escape plan from &#8216;costly&#8217; WA GST deal<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Productivity Commission finds the WA GST deal is a &#8220;costly mistake&#8221; that has led to &#8220;perverse&#8221; outcomes, and recommends it be scrapped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Is it fair that 93 per cent of Commonwealth-owned natural gas should benefit just 10 per cent of Australia&#8217;s population?&#8221; Senator Hanson asked the chamber in September 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;My view is no.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Western Australia receives a huge benefit without compensating the other states because of the passage of the Treasury Laws Amendment (Making Sure Every State and Territory Gets Their Fair Share of GST) Act 2018.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In another speech delivered in March, Senator Hanson said the WA government was &#8220;addicted to Commonwealth-owned petroleum resources&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She noted the billions of dollars in royalties WA received from offshore gas projects were not included in calculations that underpinned the GST distribution. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Now, it appears, her view has evolved.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>GST stoush continues<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Amid a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-17\/former-wa-senator-mathias-cormann-defends-current-gst-system\/107046214\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107046214\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brawl between the states<\/a> over the Morrison-era deal, which the Productivity Commission last week <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-14\/albanese-and-chalmers-given-escape-plan-from-costly-wa-gst-deal\/107038112\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107038112\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">labelled a &#8220;costly mistake&#8221; that only benefits WA<\/a>, the Queensland senator has emerged as a defender of the west.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The deal guarantees states a minimum return of 75 cents in the dollar, or no lower than NSW and Victoria, after WA&#8217;s share fell to below 30 cents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;No, I&#8217;m not pulling anything from WA,&#8221; Senator Hanson told News24 last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Yes they do have the mining and they&#8217;re a progressive state, but they&#8217;ve actually done business and encouraged business there, so the GST was increased.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-14\/wa-premier-lashes-east-coast-clowns-over-gst-report\/107039200\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WA premier lashes &#8216;east-coast clowns&#8217; over an explosive proposed shake-up of the GST carve-up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;What&#8217;s Victoria doing? They&#8217;ve destroyed the whole gas industry down there, the mining sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;These states cannot rely on other states to prop them up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Senator Hanson now endorses the deal, despite her own state complaining the carve-up was broken and that Queenslanders were being dudded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;For years, Queensland has been denied its fair share. This report proves it,&#8221; Queensland Treasurer David Janetzki said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Close relationship with Rinehart<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The change of heart appears to coincide with Senator Hanson&#8217;s increasingly close relationship with billionaire mining magnate Gina Rinehart, who is born and bred in WA, where the GST is a very big deal.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Gina Rinehart and Pauline Hanson smiling. (ABC News: Alistair Bates)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Leaving no one in doubt about their position, the federal WA Liberals proclaimed: &#8220;Over our dead bodies will they take a cent from Western Australia!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Even Teal independent Kate Chaney, whose electorate covers Perth&#8217;s leafy western suburbs, pushed back on the widespread criticism, calling the current GST arrangements fair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Productivity Commission will hand down its final report by the end of the year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Call it the Gina effect.
