she said on Monday.

“My advice from Victoria Police is that there has not been identified any unauthorised access for tasers and these other devices.”

Devices used across Australia that are potentially vulnerable to the bluetooth issue:NSW — Axon body-worn cameras and T7 model tasersVIC — Axon body-worn cameras and T7 model tasersQld — Axon body-worn cameras and T10 model tasersWA — Axon body-worn cameras and T7 model tasersTas — Planning to trial Axon T10 model tasersNT — Axon body-worn camerasSA — SAPOL say their new T10 models are not affected as they will not be bluetooth-integrated with other techAustralian Federal Police (including ACT Policing) — Axon T7 model tasers

At a press conference on Tuesday, Acting Queensland Police Commissioner Brett Pointing also played down concerns for officer safety.

“We think the risks are minimal, but regardless, we’re working very closely with the providers of that technology and other jurisdictions to ensure that our officers are safe,” informing officers that it continued to work with Axon on the issue.

The latest advice says that tasers do not emit bluetooth “while in a passive state” and only when the device is “activated”.

Victoria Police would not confirm whether it had tested this independently or was solely relying on advice from Axon.

In a statement it said: “Victoria Police has conducted necessary inquiries and is satisfied Tasers do not emit bluetooth low energy when in a passive state.”

The hacker who tipped off Four Corners to the security flaw was able to detect and track dozens of Axon tasers, as well as body-worn cameras, outside a Melbourne police station using a publicly available app.

Hackers can track the location of cops in real time

A major security flaw means the location of devices used by police, potentially including undercover officers and those travelling home, is visible to anyone with a phone or laptop.

The new advice tells officers to set their body-worn cameras to “flight mode” in situations where detection is a risk.

But it warns that “flight mode” will disable or interfere with automatic camera activation and “may result in contemporaneous evidence capture being lost”.

Officers have been told they must manually activate their cameras in situations such as executing a search warrant “to ensure capture of any subsequent use of force or critical incident”.

Police accountability lawyer Jeremy King said rather than solving the issue, the advice from Victoria Police raised even more problems.

He said it was concerning that thousands of Victoria Police officers now had permission to effectively deactivate their body-worn cameras during raids and other incidents.

“Body-worn cameras are one of the few meaningful ways we can hold police accountable,” he said.

“They record critical evidence.

“Now, because police have engaged with a flawed product, they’re allowing officers to have even more discretion over when incidents are caught on camera.”

Police pulled him over on his farm.
