{"id":75160,"date":"2026-08-19T00:45:18","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T00:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/75160\/"},"modified":"2026-08-19T00:45:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T00:45:18","slug":"queensland-rail-reaches-in-principle-deal-with-train-controllers-but-reduced-timetable-remains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/75160\/","title":{"rendered":"Queensland Rail reaches in-principle deal with train controllers, but reduced timetable remains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Queensland Rail has reached an in-principle agreement with unions representing train controllers, but says services will remain on a reduced timetable in the south-east.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Fair Work Commission has overseen bargaining negotiations since May, after six enterprise agreements between Queensland Rail (QR) and seven unions expired earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The most recent in-principle agreement, which covers about 270 employees across the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) and The Services Union (TSU), was agreed upon yesterday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It comes after QR <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-02\/queensland-rail-pay-negotiations-with-unions\/106865478\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106865478\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reached a deal with unions for half its workers in June.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a statement, QR said the in-principle agreement was &#8220;positive progress&#8221;, but negotiations with other unions remained underway.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A Springfield Central train through a fence.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4878edb5259256b05b8a9585d7530df6.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Services have been running to a reduced service since May. (ABC News: Lucas Hill)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The Australian Manufacturing Workers&#8217; Union (AMWU), which represents rollingstock employees, is still undertaking protected industrial action including rolling work stoppages and a ban on overtime,&#8221; the statement read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">From this week, QR has restored 135 weekly train services to boost the current reduced timetable<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There is still a backlog of rollingstock maintenance due to this ongoing union-protected industrial action, which has prevented full-service running,&#8221; QR said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Given Queensland Rail continues to be constrained by a rollingstock maintenance backlog, we do not expect the in-principle agreement on the Train Control Enterprise Agreement to allow the return of additional services at this time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg said Queenslanders wanted &#8220;trains running, not ongoing industrial action&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It is positive we&#8217;ve made progress on in-principle agreements, most recently with train controllers represented by the RTBU and TSU; however, protected industrial action, particularly by the AMWU continues to delay a return to full-service running,&#8221; Mr Mickelberg said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The sooner all unions finalise the remaining agreements and end the disruption, the sooner we can get on with restoring all rail services across the network.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Brent Mickelberg at a press conference.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/0491302ffa9a68c2477b116ca9055e8f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Brent Mickelberg says the progress is &#8220;positive.&#8221; (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Services Union deputy secretary Rebecca Girard said the union had been able to &#8220;work through issues and deliver a good outcome&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We have secured the existing conditions that have applied for those employees after many years of negotiations, and we&#8217;ve also been able to secure some wins,&#8221; Ms Girard said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;One of the biggest features of these negotiations has been ensuring that there&#8217;s been measures in place in relation to safety practices, and the introduction of change with new technologies.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A train at a platform at Roma Street Station in Brisbane\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/dad21836682e800cba10829e5d869af7.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The final offer will be subject to approval from Queensland Rail and the state government.
