{"id":75888,"date":"2026-08-19T21:22:37","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T21:22:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/75888\/"},"modified":"2026-08-19T21:22:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T21:22:37","slug":"albanese-intervenes-after-keogh-snubs-decorated-veterans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/75888\/","title":{"rendered":"Albanese intervenes after Keogh snubs decorated veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the 60th anniversary of the battle of Long Tan \u2013 now officially Vietnam Veterans Day \u2013 the political focus shifted from Labor\u2019s belated legislative success on gambling and media reforms, NDIS changes and amending the so-called widow\u2019s tax, to a snub by Veterans\u2019 Affairs Minister Matt Keogh to a group of decorated veterans.<\/p>\n<p>Keogh had refused to meet the veterans campaigning against his $5000 cap on allied health ser\u00advices for veterans, declaring he was too busy; when shamed into meeting them, he complained he was missing a meeting with the Governor-General.<\/p>\n<p>After a silent standing protest in parliament on Monday and a walkout from the public gallery, fury and furore grew, with the veterans declaring Keogh\u2019s position \u201cuntenable\u201d. Albanese stepped in, offered them a meeting with his office and even offered a personal meeting later.<\/p>\n<p>By chance, Albanese met the group in the corridors of Parliament House, greeted them and gladly shook hands \u2013 a point of disagreement in the meeting with the minister. Later, as Albanese watched Keogh like a hawk, the minister told parliament: \u201cI got it wrong in not agreeing to meet with them last week.
