Tui Kamikamica\u2019s bid to captain Fiji at the World Cup<\/a> and play on next year is over, after he was forced into a medical retirement following advice from specialists.<\/p>\n

Kamikamica\u2019s career had been hanging in the balance since he suffered a stroke in March, leaving him needing heart and brain surgery.<\/p>\n

The 32-year-old had hoped to return for the Storm<\/a> this year, before being driven on by a potential comeback for Fiji in October at the World Cup.<\/p>\n

But recent medical advice prompted him into retirement, bringing an end to a 142-game NRL career that included being in the squads for the 2017 and 2020 premierships.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m incredibly proud of everything I\u2019ve been able to achieve in the game, representing Storm and captaining my country,\u201d Kamikamica said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so grateful to the club, my teammates, coaches, staff and everyone who has supported me and my family throughout my rugby league career.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTui has given an enormous amount to Melbourne Storm over the past decade,\u201d Melbourne CEO Justin Rodski said.<\/p>\n

\u201c(He) leaves the club with the respect and admiration of everyone who has had the privilege of working alongside him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has been an outstanding player, teammate and leader, but above all else, Tui is a wonderful person who has always put his teammates and the club first.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis contribution to our two premiership teams in 2017 and 2020, his leadership within our playing group and his commitment to representing Fiji are all testament to the character of the man.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kamikamika\u2019s retirement comes at the end of what has been a tough year for the Storm off the field, including coach Craig Bellamy\u2019s own health battles.<\/p>\n

Melbourne are still gathering medical opinions on Eliesa Katoa\u2019s future, which is likely to be assessed further in the next month.<\/p>\n

Both Katoa and the Storm still hope he will be able to return to the field, after three head knocks in the space of 90 minutes with Tonga last year led to seizure activity and bleeding on the brain.<\/p>\n

Katoa must initially return to minimal-contract training as a first step, before anything beyond that is fully considered.<\/p>\n

The Tongan international remains contracted until the end of next year, with the Storm also facing the tricky balance of planning their 2028 roster and salary cap.<\/p>\n

Katoa had been close to the best second-rower in the NRL last year, with his absence desperately felt at the Storm in this season.<\/p>\n
