Just over an hour from Melbourne\u2019s CBD, a single-track trail opens onto breezy coastal views at Bushrangers Bay Nature Walk on the Mornington Peninsula.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a moderate, high-reward hike that threads through native bush, drops to a rugged bay framed by basalt cliffs, and finishes at one of Victoria\u2019s most iconic lightstations, Cape Schanck, still flashing after more than 160 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n
For Melburnians craving a weekend reset without the long drive, this is the kind of day trip that feels like leaving the state\u2014with all the salt air, sweeping ocean views and history you can touch.<\/p>\n
The walk: banksia, birds & (often) kangaroos<\/p>\n

The most popular route starts at the eastern car park beside Cape Schanck Lighthouse and follows a 2.6-kilometre track each way to Bushrangers Bay, a roughly 5.4-kilometre return hike that typically takes around two hours.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Then, the path winds through coastal alkaline scrub and swamp scrub, with sandy, unsealed sections, some steep stairs and exposed roots (sturdy shoes are a must!).\u00a0<\/p>\n
Go early or late and the bush comes alive. Eastern grey kangaroos frequently graze near the trail, while honeyeaters and other native birds dart through the banksia and eucalypts.\u00a0\u00a0Parks Victoria also flags that hooded plovers nest on the dunes at Bushrangers Bay, so it\u2019s important to stay on marked paths and avoid restricted habitat areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As the track descends toward the coast, the landscape opens into sweeping views of Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean. Bushrangers Bay itself is a beautiful, undeveloped cove with tons of dark sand, jagged basalt cliffs and waves that crash hard against the shore.\u00a0<\/p>\n
At low tide, natural rock pools emerge along the shoreline, creating irresistible photo opportunities and a sense of discovery. Swimming, however, is not recommended. <\/p>\n
Parks Victoria explicitly warns that Bushrangers Bay is an unpatrolled beach with unpredictable rips, strong currents, rocky reefs and large waves, plus limited emergency access.\u00a0Treat the pools as a look-and-explore zone and always check local tide charts if you want to time your visit safely.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Built between 1857 and 1859 from locally quarried limestone, Cape Schanck is Victoria\u2019s second coastal lighthouse and part of a historic \u201ctriangle\u201d of Bass Strait lights with Cape Otway and Cape Wickham.<\/p>\n
The 21-metre tower has guided ships through some of Australia\u2019s most dangerous shipping lanes for more than a century and a half. Its original 1859 Chance Brothers lens is still in place, making the lightstation one of the most intact and authentic in the country.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The precinct includes a heritage-listed lighthouse, museum and former keepers\u2019 quarters, with ongoing works aimed at reopening more of the lightkeeper\u2019s quarters to the public.\u00a0<\/p>\n
From the lighthouse grounds, a wooden boardwalk leads to Pulpit Rock, a dramatic lookout that juts into the churning ocean and offers one of the peninsula\u2019s most memorable vantage points.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve done the hike, the peninsula has plenty to fill out a day trip. The Cape Schanck Lightstation precinct includes a museum and heritage-listed tower, with ongoing works to reopen more of the lightkeeper\u2019s quarters to visitors. <\/p>\n
Just a short drive away, the coastal villages of Flinders and Portsea offer boutique shopping, galleries and some of the region\u2019s best cafes and restaurants, while the Peninsula Hot Springs<\/a> near Fingal provide a classic post-hike soak with ocean views.<\/p>\n
