{"id":76426,"date":"2026-08-20T07:47:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T07:47:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/76426\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T07:47:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T07:47:14","slug":"former-chief-of-staff-to-linda-reynolds-received-1-48m-payout-over-impact-of-brittany-higgins-rape-allegation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/76426\/","title":{"rendered":"Former chief of staff to Linda Reynolds received $1.48m payout over impact of Brittany Higgins rape allegation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The former political staffer to whom Brittany Higgins first disclosed her rape allegation has received a $1.48 million payout from the Commonwealth in a settlement over claims her workplace rights were compromised in the fallout of the scandal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Fiona Brown took her claims to Fair Work last year, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-29\/former-political-staffer-settles-case-brittany-higgins-fallout\/106971840\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106971840\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arguing she was effectively made a scapegoat for the Morrison government in the wake of Ms Higgins publicly airing allegations<\/a> she had been raped by Bruce Lehrmann at Parliament House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At the time, Ms Brown was the chief of staff for then Liberal senator Linda Reynolds and became a central figure in both Mr Lehrmann&#8217;s aborted criminal trial, as well as his later defamation case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Federal Court found, on the balance of probabilities, Ms Higgins was raped by Mr Lehrmann in Senator Reynolds&#8217;s office, but Justice Michael Lee did not accept claims that the government or Ms Brown had concealed the assault.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A separate WA Supreme Court defamation trial brought by Senator Reynolds against Ms Higgins also dismissed claims of a cover-up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-04-15\/bruce-lehrmann-defamation-trial-judgment\/103706656\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/103706656\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mr Lehrmann continues to maintain his innocence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fair Work case settled in mediation<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Brown&#8217;s Fair Work case centred on allegations that she was effectively made a scapegoat for the government as it scrambled to respond to Ms Higgins&#8217;s allegations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The veteran public servant alleged media questions addressed to her were answered without her oversight and she was denied a right to defend herself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Part of her case centred on a tense Question Time in the days after the allegations, when then-prime minister Scott Morrison faced a barrage of questions about Ms Higgins&#8217;s story from then-opposition leader Anthony Albanese.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Brittany Higgins stands looking serious.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2a298367ab5b6a4d366f3f7652141ea4.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Brittany Higgins disclosed her rape allegation to Fiona Brown, who was chief of staff to Senator Linda Reynolds at the time.
