{"id":76700,"date":"2026-08-20T18:15:19","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T18:15:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/76700\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T18:15:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T18:15:19","slug":"morley-verge-tree-could-face-the-chop-because-of-dropping-seasonal-leaves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/76700\/","title":{"rendered":"Morley verge tree could face the chop because of dropping \u2018seasonal\u2019 leaves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">A Morley resident is fed up with the \u201cseasonal leaves\u201d falling from a city-owned verge tree and wants it to be removed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">However, the 9m-tall Liquidambar verge tree isn\u2019t actually located on the applicant\u2019s verge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The City of Bayswater\u2019s officers\u2019 report states that while the applicant resides at Elstead Way, Morley, the subject tree is located on the verge adjacent to the applicant\u2019s residence on Elstead Way, Morley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cThe request therefore relates to a tree located approximately two properties, or 50m, from the applicant\u2019s residence,\u201d the officers\u2019 report states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">It was reported that the owner and occupier of the home on the verge in which the tree in question is situated, subsequently advised the city that they did not object to council considering the request for removal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The officers noted that no concerns were raised regarding the tree\u2019s health, structure, safety, or impacts on their property.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/b0f00ac4a6d5b7a2d5fdbd4505c1632e2c65e183.jpg\" alt=\"Location of subject tree and applicant's property.\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconLocation of subject tree and applicant&#8217;s property. Credit: City of Bayswater<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The basis of the request is about seasonal leaf litter and associated maintenance requests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cThe applicant has advised that leaves from the tree during the autumn fall period are carried by wind onto the street and nearby properties,\u201d the report states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cThis includes impacting both front and back yards on a daily basis. They have also stated that the city\u2019s drainage is regularly blocked by leaves requiring maintenance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cThe city has responded by providing additional road sweeping and attending to drains when reported. Credit: City of Bayswater<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The officers\u2019 report acknowledged the applicant\u2019s concerns but said the impacts are considered a \u201cnormal characteristic of a healthy deciduous street tree and do not satisfy the city\u2019s criteria for removal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">According to the city\u2019s Urban Tree Planting and Maintenance Policy, the tree \u201cdoes not satisfy\u201d any of the policy removal criteria including decline, unacceptable risk, significant infrastructure damage, disease, or safety concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The city also noted that the tree contributes to foraging opportunities for local fauna.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cLiquidambar fruit and seed are known to be utilised by endangered Carnaby\u2019s black cockatoos and vulnerable Forest red-tailed black cockatoos, particularly during periods when preferred native food sources are limited,\u201d the officers\u2019 report states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cWhile not a primary food source species, retention of established canopy trees that provide supplementary foraging resources contribute to the ecological value of the urban forest and support broader biodiversity outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Alannah Fellows, who inspected the tree on June 15, said the tree is in \u201cfair health and good condition, exhibiting a well-formed structure with healthy foliage and no visible signs of stress or decline\u201d and recommended the tree be retained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Council are expected to make their decision on the fate of the tree at their meeting on August 25.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Morley resident is fed up with the \u201cseasonal leaves\u201d falling from a city-owned verge tree and wants&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":76701,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[917,3683,152,335,464],"class_list":["post-76700","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-perth","tag-central","tag-environment","tag-news","tag-perth","tag-wa-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/76700","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=76700"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/76700\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/76701"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=76700"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=76700"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=76700"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
