{"id":76750,"date":"2026-08-20T21:02:23","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T21:02:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/76750\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T21:02:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T21:02:23","slug":"sure-mate-abcqueer-launches-attack-on-barnaby-joyce-over-his-claim-one-nation-is-one-of-the-gayest-parties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/76750\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Sure mate&#8217;: ABCQueer launches attack on Barnaby Joyce over his claim One Nation is &#8216;one of the gayest parties&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the relationship between the two already at rock bottom, the ABC has taken the extraordinary step of issuing a blistering rebuke of Barnaby Joyce&#8217;s claim that One Nation is one of the \u201cgayest parties in Australia\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a newsletter on Wednesday, the taxpayer-funded ABCQueer took the position that not only was One Nation not one of the gayest parties, as Barnaby Joyce claimed, but that no one should \u201cexpect to see Pauline at Mardi Gras. Ever.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The newsletter is the latest attack on One Nation by the ABC, which has been banned from a number of One Nation events in recent months after the party claimed they were not given a \u201cfair go.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the newsletter, the\u00a0ABCQueer\u00a0team referred to Mr Joyce\u2019s ABC interview on Monday where he claimed to Patricia Karvelas that One Nation was one of the gayest parties in Australia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSure mate,\u201d the newsletter said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore you wonder if One Nation is more inclusive than originally thought, just remember their stance on trans rights and many, many other things.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0expect to see Pauline at Mardi Gras. Ever.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0the\u00a0interview with Mr Joyce that the newsletter referred to, the One Nation MP defended the party after it\u00a0emerged\u00a0a former candidate had described homosexuality as a mental illness.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t want to say it,\u201d Mr Joyce told the ABC.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I think\u00a0we&#8217;re\u00a0one of the gayest parties in Australia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have quite a large proportion of gay people, and they&#8217;re all the same.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don&#8217;t want to be glorified. They don&#8217;t want to be vilified. They just want people to accept them, and they go on and do a very good job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said One Nation supported an Australian culture that was \u201ctolerant\u201d and \u201cegalitarian\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that culture bleeds an inappropriate comment that is outside the guardrails of Australia, and\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0why I believe in the Australian culture, which says \u2018no, we\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0concur with views like that\u2019,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople have views, of course, but\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0got to be within the Australian guardrails.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s one of our key policies, we believe in an Australian culture that is tolerant, egalitarian, and has things that are inside the guardrails.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3177b1dc0d5474736170e13643b8fc74.jpeg\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"\u2018I just don\u2019t like it\u2019: Hanson stands by 1996 Mardi Gras remarks\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The latest ABC intervention is part of a much broader dispute between the public broadcaster and One Nation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ms Hanson has repeatedly accused the ABC of political bias and has barred its journalists from some One Nation events.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#8217;ve been very biased towards me for many years, even back in 1996 when I was first elected,\u201d Ms Hanson told News24\u00a0earlier this year.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The dispute has escalated in recent months.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One Nation blocked ABC journalists from attending a press event during the Farrer by-election campaign, while the <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com.au\/business\/media\/taxpayerfunded-abc-chair-kim-williams-takes-aim-at-one-nation-while-claiming-editorial-neutrality\/news-story\/a144621a02473606600c58197b33f9e0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ABC&#8217;s chair Kim Williams later criticised the party&#8217;s decision.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think if you&#8217;re going to choose who you talk to and who you don&#8217;t talk to, you&#8217;re in a dark and dangerous place in democracy,\u201d Mr Williams said.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd\u00a0I think politicians\u00a0are accountable to the\u00a0people\u00a0and they\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0get to pick\u00a0who&#8217;s\u00a0going to question them. Clearly One Nation has a different view.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerhaps their\u00a0concern is because they are such a policy-free zone, but I say that objectively, not in any spirit of partisanship. One Nation has\u00a0statements,\u00a0it doesn&#8217;t have policies.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ms Hanson rejected the characterisation and again accused the ABC of bias.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She has also threatened to strip the broadcaster of its public funding and move it towards a user-pays model.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com.au\/business\/media\/we-want-just-fair-reporting-pauline-hansons-message-to-abc-the-guardian-the-age-after-being-blocked-from-one-nation-event\/news-story\/11064600b8b14e38824c0504a465130c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the ABC, The\u00a0Guardian\u00a0and The Age were denied entry to a One Nation event in Melbourne<\/a> where the party announced Victorian candidates.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ms Hanson defended the decision and said\u00a0previous\u00a0media bans had resulted in what she considered fairer coverage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re\u00a0left-leaning\u00a0&#8230; and\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0so opinionated.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0not interested,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In June, <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com.au\/politics\/one-nation-leader-pauline-hanson-clashes-with-abc-journalist-over-meaning-of-monoculture-versus-multiculturalism\/news-story\/1abeebdabfc4ddc967b17d8d6f3f4260\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ms Hanson had a heated exchange with an ABC reporter<\/a> over her comments about multiculturalism and her calls for a \u201cmonoculture\u201d in Australia.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The exchange centred on whether people could speak other languages at home, practise different religions and eat different foods under Ms Hanson&#8217;s vision for Australia.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ABC journalist pressed Ms Hanson for details on what she meant by \u201cmonoculture\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ms Hanson has since accused sections of the media of <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com.au\/politics\/one-nation-leader-pauline-hanson-faces-journalists-in-first-ever-appearance-at-national-press-club\/news-story\/8552a29bf7687dbb802532e1dc1e4291\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deliberately misrepresenting her views.\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ABC and One Nation have been contacted for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"With the relationship between the two already at rock bottom, the ABC has taken the extraordinary step of&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":76751,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[1647,22,21,4918,1955,1926],"class_list":["post-76750","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-australia","tag-abc","tag-au","tag-austrlia","tag-barnaby-joyce","tag-one-nation","tag-pauline-hanson"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/76750","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=76750"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/76750\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/76751"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=76750"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=76750"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=76750"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
