{"id":77019,"date":"2026-08-21T03:28:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T03:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/77019\/"},"modified":"2026-08-21T03:28:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T03:28:11","slug":"fourth-sydney-airport-runway-safety-incident-in-almost-as-many-weeks-being-investigated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/77019\/","title":{"rendered":"Fourth Sydney Airport runway safety incident in almost as many weeks being investigated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A fourth incident involving aircraft on the ground at Sydney Airport in just over three weeks is being investigated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Airservices Australia, the government-owned organisation responsible for air traffic management, said it reported the &#8220;potential traffic conflict&#8221; between two Qantas planes to safety authorities on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said that just after 8am, Qantas flight QF589 had been heading west along taxiway Lima after landing from the Gold Coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At the same time, Qantas flight QF405 to Melbourne had been given permission to turn onto that taxiway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The ATSB said that when the crew of the Melbourne-bound flight noticed the other plane, they stopped and allowed it to pass ahead of them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was no immediate risk of collision, with [QF405] braking normally before coming to a stop,&#8221;  a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;As such the ATSB has classified this as a safety &#8220;incident&#8221;, rather than a &#8220;serious incident&#8221;, but has elected to conduct an investigation to understand the potential conflicting instructions to the flight crews.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Qantas said its aircraft had been cleared to proceed following instructions from air traffic control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The airline also said it would support the ATSB&#8217;s investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth incident<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Qantas plands\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/c4724cce43bf0c52697d70690c145fac.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Airservices Australia says each incident is being investigated on its individual facts. consequences if safety issues are not addressed, a former pilot and aviation safety investigator says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Each of those incidents are being investigated by the ATSB, which said it would examine whether they had any common contributing factors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Airservices Australia said all the incidents involved a &#8220;range of circumstances&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Each incident is being investigated on its individual facts,&#8221;
