{"id":77037,"date":"2026-08-21T03:50:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T03:50:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/77037\/"},"modified":"2026-08-21T03:50:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T03:50:16","slug":"e-bike-crackdown-age-limits-police-powers-proposed-for-one-aussie-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/77037\/","title":{"rendered":"E-bike crackdown: Age limits, police powers proposed for one Aussie state"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Aussies could soon see a nationwide push for tougher e-bike laws as momentum builds to crack down on reckless riders across the country.<\/p>\n<p>South Australia is the latest state in the firing line, with the Royal Automobile Association of South Australia and the Australian Medical Association (SA) calling for riders to be at least 16 and for police to have more powers to crack down on illegal e-bikes and e-scooters.<\/p>\n<p>The fresh calls come after police arrested six teenagers for allegedly riding recklessly on e-bikes, prompting a major response that included a helicopter in Adelaide.<\/p>\n<p>After examining the six e-bikes, police say they had all been illegally modified to the point that they were classified as motorcycles under the state\u2019s law.<\/p>\n<p>MORE:<a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/technology\/motoring\/motoring-news\/green-police-crackdown-drivers-cop-new-bill\/news-story\/0a15f38049ea03d235cf0679f4415378\" title=\"www.news.com.au\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"0a15f38049ea03d235cf0679f4415378\" data-tgev-label=\"technology\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Green police crackdown: Drivers cop new bill<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The RAA has now made a submission to the State Government\u2019s review of personal mobility device (PMD) legislation, which came into effect in July 2025, as well as the state\u2019s existing e-bike laws.<\/p>\n<p>RAA Senior Manager Road Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain said more education and tougher enforcement were needed as e-bikes and e-scooters became more popular.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/content.api.news\/v3\/images\/bin\/b92c89693da7efbf46b2e15a37365f28\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"Over 420 infringements issued after cops crackdown on e-mobility riders\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cE-scooters and e-bikes are a legitimate transport option for many South Australians looking for more ways to get around, and can help take pressure off our roads,\u201d Mr Mountain said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut as more people take them up, it\u2019s important we get the safety settings right before poor behaviours become entrenched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mountain said the RAA had seen a growing number of high-powered, modified devices that were \u201cessentially unregistered motorcycles\u201d, capable of travelling well beyond legal speeds.<\/p>\n<p>And based on research, rule awareness remains alarmingly low, with around 8 in 10 road users unaware of current speed limits and age restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the RAA is calling for targeted police blitzes focusing on speeding, helmet use and underage riding, along with drug and alcohol testing powers for e-bike riders.<\/p>\n<p>Other recommendations also include a minimum age of 16 for e-bike riders, arguing that the extra power and weight of the devices present additional risks for younger riders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know some younger riders use e-bikes safely and responsibly, but on balance we think safety should come first,\u201d Mr Mountain said.<\/p>\n<p>MORE: <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/technology\/motoring\/motoring-news\/how-desperate-drivers-trade-points-on-facebook\/news-story\/1f0f59de8c3c471f7591a5a7e2d4e4d6\" title=\"www.news.com.au\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"1f0f59de8c3c471f7591a5a7e2d4e4d6\" data-tgev-label=\"technology\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Desperate\u2019: Aussies risk 3yrs jail for just $100<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The RAA isn\u2019t the only organisation concerned with the rise of e-bikes in the country.<\/p>\n<p>AMA SA President Associate Professor Peter Subramaniam backed the proposed age restriction, saying e-bikes are heavier than traditional bicycles and can reach sustained speeds of up to 25km\/h, or faster when illegally modified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cE-bikes are not toys. They are typically heavier than regular bicycles and capable of travelling at sustained speeds of 25 km\/h \u2013 even faster when illegally modified,\u201d Professor Subramaniam said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoctors see the consequences in emergency departments far too often. We treat serious injuries including head trauma, chest and abdominal injuries, and major fractures, many involving riders who are simply too young to safely manage the risks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While e-bikes can be a useful transport option for many people, Professor Subramaniam argued the risk outweighs the benefits for children under 16.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed changes also come amid a broader push for greater consistency in Australia\u2019s e-bike laws.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, laws surrounding e-mobility devices vary between states and territories.<\/p>\n<p>The Albanese Government recently asked the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to develop a new mandatory safety standard for e-bikes under Australian consumer law. <\/p>\n<p>Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said the standard was an important step towards cracking down on unsafe and illegal e-rideables.<\/p>\n<p>MORE: <a class=\"body-link\" sold are legal and fit for purpose and will help keep Australians safe,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>If South Australia implements a minimum age restriction for e-bike riders, it would closely align with Queensland, which requires riders to be at least 16 years old and hold a valid driver\u2019s licence.<\/p>\n<p>Children aged 12 to 17 will need to be under direct adult supervision when riding e-bikes in Queensland.<\/p>\n<p>The new licensing rules are set to come into effect later this month.<\/p>\n<p>NSW has also moved to tighten its e-bike rules, with reforms set to restrict e-bikes to 250 watts from August, bringing the state in line with other jurisdictions.<\/p>\n<p>The NSW Government has also introduced Australia\u2019s first laws designed to clean up cluttered footpaths from shared e-bikes.<\/p>\n<p>Shared e-bike operators will now need to receive approval from Transport for NSW and council before providing their services.<\/p>\n<p>Fines can reach $55,000 if the rule is
