(ABC News: Nathan Morris)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The National Farmers Federation (NFF) estimates that backpackers make up about half of Australia&#8217;s peak-harvest casual workforce and says any cuts are alarming.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Backpackers] are essential to our industry and the food security of the nation,&#8221;  horticulture spokesman Richard Shannon said.&#8217;Rural people will suffer&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirmed on Sunday that <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-17\/mining-business-immigrant-worker-skilled-visa-economy\/107043674\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107043674\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WHM visas were being processed &#8220;more slowly than they were previously&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The government website for the WHM visas shows applications from 24 countries have been paused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The pause on visa approvals comes amid furious debate about the future of Australia&#8217;s migration policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has not guaranteed backpackers will be exempt <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-18\/australia-working-holiday-maker-visa-program-pause\/107046986\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107046986\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">from the Coalition&#8217;s planned cuts to migration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But Nationals leader Matt Canavan has previously promised his party would not allow any changes, arguing working holiday-makers are crucial for rural communities.<\/p>\n<p>Backpackers in times of crisis<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australian charity <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/rural\/2024-03-06\/blazeaid-rebuilding-fences-and-healing-hearts-after-bushfires\/103529274\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/103529274\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BlazeAid organises volunteers to clean up and rebuild farms and fences<\/a> after fires, floods and cyclones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Backpackers make up a large proportion of the organisation&#8217;s helpers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I just worry that if this slowdown occurs, then our Australian society and particularly rural people will suffer,&#8221; BlazeAid chief executive Melissa Jones said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a woman stands with her parents in a wool shed \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5c1b0c535e7154b3d459bc0cc8d60e32.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Melissa Jones (left, with her parents Kevin and Rhonda Butler) is worried about disaster recovery and the agriculture workforce. (Supplied: Melissa Jones)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;At our base camp in Euroa [in Victoria] at the moment, where we&#8217;re working after the Longwood fires, [and] 75 per cent of those in camp are backpackers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Jones said the benefit of having working holiday makers went &#8220;well beyond the fences that we rebuild.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They spend money in the local shops, they stay in the local communities, they create connections with people in towns,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They&#8217;re not buying our houses, they&#8217;re not taking the space that we need.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They&#8217;re actually very beneficial to our country, and it should stay that way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">South Australian potato grower Terry Buckley said backpackers were also crucial to his business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We usually have some backpackers when we&#8217;re cutting our seed potatoes for planting and \u2026 when we&#8217;re harvesting in autumn.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Terry Buckley kneels in a potato field holding some freshly harvested potatoes. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/f7ab3ed71b424562ee1e1b0decac1532.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Terry Buckley says that without backpackers, he would have to buy expensive machinery. (ABC South East SA: Elsie Adamo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Buckley said, without them, he would have to buy more machinery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of machinery that&#8217;s $1 million a piece now, so that&#8217;s all got to be recouped somehow,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Pacific workers &#8216;not a substitute&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">When confirming the slowing of approvals, Mr Burke argued the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme was the &#8220;principal visa for the agriculture industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But Mr Shannon said there was plenty of work for both PALM workers and backpackers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They are not substitutes.
