(Supplied: Nathan Beard)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She insisted that evening, even after the shock of the event, to bathe herself, and to do so independently.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The National Portrait Gallery&#8217;s Director of Curatorial and Collection, Isobel Parker Philip, said the photograph conveyed fortitude and strength, coupled with fatigue and vulnerability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You can&#8217;t see her face but that doesn&#8217;t mean you don&#8217;t have an emotional connection to her,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You might look at it and see one of your loved ones; you can read the many, many years of her life experiences in the frame.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mae died in July, meaning she will never know of the prestigious accolade bestowed on her nephew.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is bittersweet being recognised for the award because it&#8217;s sort of a final gift of hers to me,&#8221;  Beard said.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two photos side by side in black and white of a man gesturing in different ways.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5b4b764194b7f84a62e426d88fbfe5c6.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ngh\u1ec9Nghi\u00eam (AttentionAt ease), 2025 by Phuong Nguyen Le, winner of the $3,000 First Time Finalist Award.
