{"id":77714,"date":"2026-08-22T03:09:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-22T03:09:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/77714\/"},"modified":"2026-08-22T03:09:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-22T03:09:16","slug":"can-the-coalition-win-government-from-labor-at-victorias-november-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/77714\/","title":{"rendered":"Can the Coalition win government from Labor at Victoria&#8217;s November election?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Victorian state election is less than 100 days away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After 12 years in opposition, the Liberal and National parties could finally be in a position to topple Labor on polling day, November 28.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Still, recent opinion polls suggest One Nation will be a player.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">So, where is the Coalition looking to pick up seats?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">How might One Nation affect the result?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">And could Labor hold its ground?<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;What is the state of play in the lower house?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There are 88 seats in Victoria&#8217;s lower house, meaning a party requires 45 to govern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor won 56 seats at the last election. (ABC News: Danielle Bonica)<\/p>\n<p>Where is Labor in danger?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor faces multiple risks: Melbourne&#8217;s west and north-western suburbs, the eastern suburbs, peri-urban communities, and the regions. The Greens are also chasing Labor in inner-city seats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After three terms in power, Labor is battling a mood for change.<\/p>\n<p>Melbourne&#8217;s west and north-west<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor has represented electorates in Melbourne&#8217;s outer west and north-west for generations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But first-preference votes for the party in these communities crashed at the last election, eroding Labor&#8217;s buffer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">To appeal to these voters, new Premier Ben Carroll has made crime a centrepiece of his leadership since taking over last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Sunbury, Sydenham, Melton and Yan Yean are in danger of falling to One Nation or the Coalition.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Electorates in jeopardy at the state election\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/f942751baefcbf00a38d4d2fcf5351cd.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Traditional Labor seats on Melbourne&#8217;s western and north-western edge including Sunbury, Sydenham, Melton and Yan Yean are in jeopardy. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But even the premier&#8217;s seat of Niddrie, north-west of Melbourne CBD, held with a 6.7 per cent margin, is not a sure thing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Coalition has Mr Carroll&#8217;s electorate on a hit list of more than 30 Labor seats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor believes the leadership change from Jacinta Allan to Mr Carroll has given voters a reason to reconsider, particularly in the heartland.<\/p>\n<p>Melbourne&#8217;s east<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Coalition must win back Melbourne&#8217;s eastern suburbs if it has any chance of retaking government, Redbridge pollster and former Labor strategist Kos Samaras says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Bayswater, Ashwood, Glen Waverley, Ringwood and Box Hill are in play.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Electorates in Melbourne's east\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6e0437406f5b040e065871017c2fc6da.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Seats in Melbourne&#8217;s east such as Bayswater, Ashwood, Glen Waverley, Box Hill and Pakenham will be crucial battleground seats for the Coalition. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Samaras says there are signs the Coalition is making headway there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor expects to lose Pakenham on Melbourne&#8217;s suburban fringes, with Victorian One Nation leader Warren Pickering contesting this ultra-marginal seat. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The government&#8217;s emergency services levy has been particularly potent for the regions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One Nation could win these seats, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Along with the outer-suburban ring around the city, the regions are where One Nation is likely to make the most headway.<\/p>\n<p>What are the risks for the Coalition?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Coalition is optimistic it can retake government under Liberal leader Jess Wilson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the Liberal and National parties are under threat, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Their commitment this week <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-19\/victorian-coalition-promises-to-scrap-vni-west-transmission-line\/107053638\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107053638\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to ditch the VNI West transmission line project<\/a> through farmland hints at One Nation&#8217;s threat in regional communities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-20\/coalition-one-nation-ripon-vni-west-election-nationals\/107054552\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Coalition pledge could win back farmer votes<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">West Victorian farmers, increasingly supportive of One Nation, welcome the Coalition&#8217;s announcement to scrap a controversial transmission line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Nationals believe their incumbent MPs, at least, will hold on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Longstanding MPs are retiring in Murray Plains and Gippsland East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Insiders argue Nationals candidates will benefit from preferences much more strongly than One Nation, which they believe would need a primary vote above 40 per cent to beat the Coalition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Samaras agrees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He expects One Nation will pick up lower house seats, but says its vote is softening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One Nation&#8217;s stated aim is to take government in Victoria but <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-03\/one-nation-victoria-candiates-revealed\/106989410\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106989410\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has so far announced only a handful <\/a>of lower house candidates.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Pauline Hanson pictured at a One Nation political fundraiser\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787368156_201_012cae31532213d53503ad500b949b95.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Pauline Hanson says she&#8217;ll work with anyone to get rid of the Victorian Labor government. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor has sought to tie Ms Wilson to One Nation, arguing the Coalition won&#8217;t be able to reach 45 seats on its own. The opposition rejects this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Research by Labor, briefed to ministers in June, claimed One Nation could take as many as 17 regional and outer-suburban seats from the Coalition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor named six Nationals-held seats as easy One Nation gains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Outer suburban Liberal seats like Rowville and Berwick could come under pressure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Liberal Party also needs to prepare for the likely loss of Prahran in inner Melbourne, after winning the seat at a by-election that Labor didn&#8217;t contest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">If the Greens retake the seat, the Coalition will need to gain 17 others to form a majority government.<\/p>\n<p>Can Labor gain ground?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor knows it will go backwards this election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Its defensive campaign means there are no Coalition seats in its sights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the party has been chasing a victory in Richmond, which the Greens have held since 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor will also have to fend off the Greens in inner-metro seats like Northcote and Footscray, though.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman gestures while speaking from notes in parliament.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/701f310032d2b79e0f95818b78fcec19.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ellen Sandell is leader of the Victorian Greens and the state member for the seat of Melbourne. (ABC News: Danielle Bonica)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Integrity has been a sore point for the government in the inner city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor now believes it can hold on here after the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-20\/vic-premier-ben-carroll-announces-construction-royal-commission\/107057862\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107057862\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announcement of a royal commission<\/a> by Mr Carroll and commitment to strengthen the anti-corruption watchdog sooner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Landing a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-17\/victorian-teachers-pay-deal-education\/107045484\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107045484\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">teacher pay-deal, struck this week<\/a>, was also key for these electorates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Yet early polls, by Resolve in The Age and Redbridge in The Australian Financial Review, have actually shown a slump in primary support for Labor following the leadership change. This was within the margin of error.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One insider said voters still needed to see more from Mr Carroll.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But they are up for listening,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And that is a big change.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Victorian state election is less than 100 days away.
