{"id":78294,"date":"2026-08-23T06:27:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-23T06:27:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/78294\/"},"modified":"2026-08-23T06:27:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T06:27:14","slug":"regional-wa-playground-shut-following-detected-levels-of-metal-after-dust-investigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/78294\/","title":{"rendered":"Regional WA playground shut following detected levels of metal after dust investigation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A playground in regional Western Australia has been closed after low levels of the metal thallium were detected in a sand pit, following environmental testing prompted by increased dust complaints.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Preliminary results of a Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) investigation into dust emissions in the port-side city of Geraldton, 400km north of Perth, uncovered an &#8216;isolated, low-level&#8217; detection of thallium at Fraser Gregory Park Playground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">According to DWER, thallium can be released from some industrial processes, including metals and cement manufacture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In July, DWER took 40 soil samples from houses, schools and healthcare facilities across the residential suburb of Beachlands, which sits next to the rail and road corridor into the Geraldton Port.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The investigation was launched following reports from Geraldton locals of <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-09\/dust-fears-surround-growing-port-of-geraldton\/106627060\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">increased dust blanketing homes and businesses,<\/a> sparking concerns about health and property damage.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Image of mayor Jerry Clune wearing glasses, a jumper with a collard shirt.
