{"id":78833,"date":"2026-08-24T03:06:31","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T03:06:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/78833\/"},"modified":"2026-08-24T03:06:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T03:06:31","slug":"one-nation-faces-its-first-real-test-in-wa-in-high-stakes-secret-harbour-by-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/78833\/","title":{"rendered":"One Nation faces its first real test in WA in high-stakes Secret Harbour by-election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">What&#8217;s more likely: Angus Taylor becoming prime minister or Basil Zempilas coaching the West Coast Eagles?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It sounds like the set-up to a joke, but it was a question effectively posed by Zempilas himself on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While attacking Labor for failing to secure a firm commitment from the prime minister on <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-14\/wa-premier-lashes-east-coast-clowns-over-gst-report\/107039200\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107039200\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WA&#8217;s share of the GST<\/a>, he was asked whether he would seek the same assurances from his federal leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Well, he&#8217;s not the prime minister,&#8221; Zempilas shot back.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He could be,&#8221; a reporter replied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He could be, and I could be the coach of the West Coast Eagles as well,&#8221; Zempilas retorted.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Basil speaking to reporters, wearing suit and blue tie. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/bfbc1a4b3cf104dda50028f762bb9b20.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Basil Zempilas seemingly compared his prospects of becoming the Eagles coach to Angus Taylor becoming prime minister.\u00a0 (ABC News: Keane Bourke\u00a0)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There are plenty of parallels between the struggling Liberals and the floundering Eagles, but it&#8217;s safe to say Zempilas wasn&#8217;t exactly talking up Taylor&#8217;s chances of leading the country.<\/p>\n<p>One Nation: Friend or foe?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor&#8217;s attacks wrote themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The leader of the opposition got out the white flag and waved it for Angus Taylor,&#8221; Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti told parliament later that day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But we know that he is very used to waving the white flag because he has waved the white flag \u2026 in Secret Harbour. For the Liberals to even dream of winning the seat, they would need One Nation preferences, so they cannot afford to upset the party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">On the other hand, One Nation poses a threat to the Liberals&#8217; very existence. Just look at South Australia, where two of the four seats One Nation won at the March election were taken directly from the blue team.<\/p>\n<p>First WA test for One Nation\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Western Australia is vastly different to the east coast, where One Nation has surged in opinion polls, and South Australia, where they&#8217;ve been tested at the ballot box.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Next Saturday&#8217;s Secret Harbour by-election will be the first real test of whether the party&#8217;s popularity is also rising across the Nullarbor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The poll is expected to challenge Labor&#8217;s stronghold on the rapidly growing, mortgage-belt seat, where a mix of older Western Australians and young families struggling with the cost of living reside.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two adults and a child standing at polling booths \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/096cf70526c19aff68059b0a08d74eee.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Pre-polling for the Secret Harbour by-election opened on Monday. (ABC News: Keane Bourke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The member being replaced in the by-election, former Labor MP Paul Papalia, said he understood it was &#8220;enticing to have a whinge and complain about things&#8221;, but no solutions had been offered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I hope people recognise we&#8217;ve had good, solid government in Western Australia. It&#8217;s the best state in the country.
