{"id":78839,"date":"2026-08-24T03:14:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T03:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/78839\/"},"modified":"2026-08-24T03:14:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T03:14:13","slug":"sacked-melbourne-chief-paul-guerras-757k-salary-revealed-in-court-claim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/78839\/","title":{"rendered":"Sacked Melbourne chief Paul Guerra\u2019s $757k salary revealed in court claim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sacked Melbourne chief executive Paul Guerra was paid a salary of $757,000 in his first season and was eligible to receive a $150,000 bonus for key performance indicators.<\/p>\n<p>The eye-watering salary was revealed as part of <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldsun.com.au\/sport\/afl\/sacked-melbourne-ceo-paul-guerra-files-unfair-dismissal-claim\/news-story\/60e2be60911b58e1497c5b837903c78a\" target=\"_blank\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"60e2be60911b58e1497c5b837903c78a\" data-tgev-label=\"sport\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Guerra\u2019s statement of claim in Federal Court documents<\/a> as he seeks compensation as part of an unfair dismissal claim against Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>Guerra was sacked only seven months into his role at the Demons and was handed a six-month payout as part of his contract.<\/p>\n<p>But in sensational allegations lodged in court, Guerra alleges he was sacked after raising concerns about widespread underpayment of administration staff.<\/p>\n<p>He also complained about the club using a consultancy firm linked to Dan Andrews as the club seeks to establish a <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldsun.com.au\/sport\/afl\/melbourne-plans-to-establish-home-at-caulfield-racecourse-progress-key-meeting-set-for-this-week\/news-story\/289ce5e10a03bc0bfb03b14806efb27f\" target=\"_blank\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"289ce5e10a03bc0bfb03b14806efb27f\" data-tgev-label=\"sport\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">home base at the Caulfield Racecourse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Guerra\u2019s salary is a key part of the claim given he came to the Demons from a role as the boss of the Victorian Chamber of Commerce.<\/p>\n<p>If Guerra had lasted 12 months at the Demons chief executive, he would have been eligible to be paid $800,000 a season.<\/p>\n<p>But the Demons sacked him as Demons president Steve Smith said upon his departure: \u201cWe just got this one wrong\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In documents seen by the Herald Sun, the claim states: \u201cMr Guerra was entitled to a salary package that included his base salary, any incentive bonus package and superannuation,\u201d according to court documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr Guerra would be paid a base salary of $757,000 per annum for the first year\u2026 Mr Guerra was entitled to a $150,000 bonus during the first year of his employment comprising: an initial incentive bonus of $50,000 payable upon the Club being reasonably satisfied that he had commenced an agreed strategy development process\u2026the implementation of measures expected to result in a bottom-line improvement of at least $500,000 on the prior year \u2026 incentive bonus payments of up to $100,000, based on \u201cstretched key performance indicators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr Guerra\u2019s salary was to increase to $807,000 per annum effective from the second year of his employment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melbourne have yet to file a defence to Guerra\u2019s statement but provided to this masthead on Sunday: \u201cThe Melbourne Football Club stands by its decision to part ways with Paul Guerra due to a loss of confidence in his ability to lead the club. The club will make no further comment at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guerra said in his statement of claims that he had raised the issue of underpayment of key staff with the AFL\u2019s chief people officer Sarah Fair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs Fair said that the AFL knows there is a problem across the AFL of clubs applying incorrect awards and the engagement of contractors who may have been employees,
