Police have raided the Melbourne headquarters of the CFMEU.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Taskforce Hawk detectives arrived at the office of the union at 9.30am on Monday before exiting the building just before noon.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for Victoria Police said the union’s Elizabeth Street office was one of multiple addresses raided by police throughout the morning.<\/p>\n
Five people have been arrested.<\/p>\n
\u201cDetectives from Taskforce Hawk executed warrants at six addresses this morning as part of a current investigation into information provided re secret commissions,” Victoria Police said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“Five people have been taken into custody and are being interviewed by police.<\/p>\n
“Further information will be provided later this afternoon.”<\/p>\n
The CFMEU confirmed their offices had been raided by Taskforce Hawk on Monday.<\/p>\n
“CFMEU has been made aware of a police operation this morning as part of Taskforce Hawk,” the union said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“As this is a live police matter, CFMEU cannot comment further at this time.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
Taskforce Hawk was established in July 2024 after explosive revelations of CFMEU corruption and criminal infiltration of Victoria’s Big Build.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The allegations led to the CFMEU being placed into administration, with the federal government appointing respected barrister Mark Irving to clean up the militant union. He has since been replaced by former Unions NSW boss Michael Crosby.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mr Irving was quick to conduct a cleanout of the disgraced union, sacking 270 union officials and 11 senior CFMEU staff.\u00a0<\/p>\n
However fresh allegations have continued to plague the organisation, with The Age reporting that some sacked officials continue to wield influence on union worksites.<\/p>\n
The corruption scandal – which has been described as the worst in Victoria’s history – played a major part in the downfall of former premier Jacinta Allan, who had consistently refused to call a Royal Commission and disputed a corruption expert’s assessment that crime and corruption on the state’s Big Build had cost taxpayers $15 billion.<\/p>\n
Premier Ben Carroll has taken a different tone since taking office, with the establishment of a Royal Commission being the first measure he announced after being elevated to the top job.\u00a0<\/p>\n
