trains delayed, cancelled as ‘urgent repairs’ needed

Train commuters are bracing for an ugly ride home as two incidents cause delays across major Sydney rail lines.

Services on the T1 North Shore Line have resumed after crews repaired damaged overhead wiring at Chatswood, but passengers on the T1 and Central Coast and Newcastle lines have been warned of residual delays on Tuesday afternoon.

Passengers on the T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line have also been told to allow extra travel time following a separate self-harm-related incident at Central requiring emergency services.

The North Shore disruption began just after 8.30pm on Monday, when a cable in the overhead wiring tension system failed between Chatswood and Artarmon, Transport for NSW said.

Early investigations suggest the failure caused counterweights to drop and overhead wires to fall to the ground, preventing trains from operating through the affected section.

Two trains carrying a total of 22 passengers were safely evacuated.

One train was carrying 12 passengers and the other had 10, with all passengers detrained without incident before crews accessed the affected area.

Engineering crews worked through the night and Tuesday morning to repair the infrastructure and undertake safety testing before services progressively resumed.

Passengers may still experience delays as trains and crews were repositioned and the timetable restored across the network, Transport for NSW said.

Replacement buses had operated between Gordon and Chatswood, while a limited train service ran between Hornsby and Gordon and passengers were encouraged to use Sydney Metro services.

Sydney Trains chief executive Matt Longland thanked passengers for their patience.

“Our priority throughout this incident was the safety of passengers and staff,” Mr Longland said.

“We thank passengers for their patience while specialist crews worked overnight to repair the damaged overhead wiring and carry out the testing required to safely restore services.”

The damaged infrastructure had been inspected as part of routine maintenance in recent months, with a detailed investigation to determine the cause of the failure.

Mr Longland earlier described the disruption at Central as an “unrelated incident” involving “a community member and a significant community safety event”.

Read related topics:<a class="topic_tag"
