{"id":79859,"date":"2026-08-25T06:51:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T06:51:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/79859\/"},"modified":"2026-08-25T06:51:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T06:51:13","slug":"andrew-hastie-criticises-basil-zempilass-strategy-in-secret-harbour-by-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/79859\/","title":{"rendered":"Andrew Hastie criticises Basil Zempilas&#8217;s strategy in Secret Harbour by-election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Western Australian Liberal MP Andrew Hastie has intensified his criticism of his party&#8217;s own WA leader, suggesting Basil Zempilas has conceded defeat in this weekend&#8217;s Secret Harbour by-election before a single vote has been counted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who is in Perth but did not campaign in Secret Harbour, seized on the deepening rift between the Liberals, saying they were &#8220;running dead&#8221; in Secret Harbour and had basically folded into One Nation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Speaking on the ABC&#8217;s 7.30, Mr Hastie said it was clear, from what Labor and the Liberals told him, that One Nation candidate Luke Herdegen was ahead in the by-election, and the major parties needed to do much better in responding to the concerns of people in outer-metropolitan areas.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Luke smiles as he answers questions from journalists while standing next to Pauline Hanson\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/c45d6a04789700f09087129593219da4.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Luke Herdegen pictured with One Nation leader Pauline Hanson.\u00a0 (ABC News: Keane Bourke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Hastie said he disagreed with the premise, put forward repeatedly by WA Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-15\/bzempilas-says-any-secret-harbour-labor-loss-a-win-for-liberals\/106917762\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106917762\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">that a Labor loss in Secret Harbour would be a victory for the Liberals, even if they did not win<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This is a state election contested on state issues, and I don&#8217;t accept this idea that a win for One Nation is a win for the Liberal Party,&#8221; Mr Hastie said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;re fighting for our lives, and we should be fighting for every single vote in Secret Harbour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Basil Zempilas said that a win for One Nation would be an opportunity. Let&#8217;s get real here,&#8221; Mr Albanese said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Zempilas yesterday mocked Mr Albanese for not going to Secret Harbour, with a Where&#8217;s Wally-type sign which said: &#8220;Where&#8217;s Albo?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Who is the state Liberal leader?&#8221; the prime minister asked in response.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He&#8217;s not even trying to run the by-election. He&#8217;s out there promoting another political party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I want my party to win. Does Basil?
