{"id":79905,"date":"2026-08-25T07:41:29","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T07:41:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/79905\/"},"modified":"2026-08-25T07:41:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T07:41:29","slug":"border-force-seizes-foreign-fishing-boat-and-detains-crew-off-far-north-queensland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/79905\/","title":{"rendered":"Border Force seizes foreign fishing boat and detains crew off Far North Queensland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australian Border Force (ABF) has seized a suspected foreign fishing boat off Queensland&#8217;s northern tip and detained its crew.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Albany Island Fishing Tours owner Dave Hartwell said he reported the boat to ABF after one of the company&#8217;s guides spotted it on Little Adolphus Island, in the southern Torres Strait, late last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Hartwell said the guide saw &#8220;about seven&#8221; people on board walking around the boat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He sort of offered\u2026 [asked] if they needed any immediate assistance, asked if they needed water,&#8221; Mr Hartwell said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He was a bit shocked, actually, rang me so we could report it straight away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The phone service is pretty dodgy out there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a statement on Tuesday, Border Force said it found the boat and crew near Little Adolphus Island on Friday after reports from the community.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A fishing boat on the water with a Border Force boat in the background\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2bcd9431de86957f257142d13d7bbe8c.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A fishing boat was seized near Little Adolphus Island in the Torres Strait on Friday. (Supplied: Australian Border Force)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Its officers boarded the boat and identified evidence of suspected illegal fishing, including fishing equipment and 700 kilograms of salt used to preserve catch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Border Force said the boat was &#8220;located before any marine life was caught&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It said the crew would be taken to Darwin for further investigation by the Australian Fisheries Management Authority, for suspected offences against the Torres Strait Fisheries Act 1984.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Border Force said it was working with partner agencies &#8220;to determine the appropriate management&#8221; of the boat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">So far this year, 14 of the 24 suspected illegal foreign fishing boats caught in Far North Queensland waters have been destroyed, Border Force said.<\/p>\n<p>Boats make locals anxious<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Hartwell said the boat was spotted about seven nautical miles north-east of Pajinka, the tip of Cape York Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It was an incredibly fast response [from Border Force] \u2026 it would be nice if no boats came in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It wasn&#8217;t a very big boat, maybe 30 foot long or 35.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Hartwell said he had seen an increased Border Force presence in the Torres Strait since a dedicated operation was launched in February in response to an influx of illegal fishing boats in the Torres Strait.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A grey boat on the water near an island.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/d9d61a9c396dcde9ad99f50abdcde8f8.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">An Australian Border Force vessel arrived to the island where the foreign boat had been spotted. (Supplied: Dave Hartwell)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t know what they can do to help but maybe a bit more in the air, or maybe some intel from [Indonesia]\u2026 find out where they are coming from,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Hartwell said those living in the isolated communities around the remote islands were anxious about the boats because &#8220;you just don&#8217;t know what they&#8217;re all about&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In late June, a boat carrying foreign nationals made landfall north of Weipa, on western Cape York Peninsula, which led to two men being charged with people smuggling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;re a long way from any police, emergency response or anything if we&#8217;re in trouble,&#8221; Mr Hartwell said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It would probably take at [the] very minimum, a helicopter or boat an hour to get here if we were in strife.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Maritime Border Command deputy commander Natasha O&#8217;Farrell thanked the community members who reported the boat.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A foreign boat floating on the water.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/51de50e07e8f564a99a7e8987db38383.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">An Albany Island fishing charter company spotted the boat sinking in the water.
