Kip&amp;Co worked with interior architecture studio State of Play to develop the store\u2019s concept, customer journey, bespoke furniture and finishes, and \u201cthe way each category would live within the space\u201d, says McCabe. <\/p>\n<p>\tSmarter business news. Sign up for free.                        <\/p>\n<p>By continuing, you agree to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartcompany.com.au\/terms-conditions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Terms &amp; Conditions<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartcompany.com.au\/privacy-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Privacy Policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe never wanted to rush it or simply open a traditional shop,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe wanted to create a true Kip&amp;Co home, and that took time, collaboration and a huge amount of consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kip&amp;Co specialises in bedding, clothing for adults and children, tableware, bath products and home accessories, and has become known for its collaborations with Australian artists, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartcompany.com.au\/retail\/kip-and-co-indigenous-artists-collaboration-ernabella-arts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Indigenous makers<\/a> and the creators of beloved children\u2019s characters \u2013 from May Gibbs\u2019 Gumnut Babies to Blinky Bill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The breadth of the range is a key reason why Kip&amp;Co now felt ready to open its own flagship store, says McCabe. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOpening our own store has been a dream for a long time, but we always knew that when we did it, it had to feel completely Kip&amp;Co,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe wanted to wait until we could create a true physical home for the brand, where people could experience the colour, pattern, texture and creativity of Kip&amp;Co in a way they simply can\u2019t through a screen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s no secret that 2026 has been a particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartcompany.com.au\/retail\/disappearing-retailers-australia-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">tough year<\/a> for Australian retailers of all shapes and sizes, but Kip&amp;Co is part of a growing trend of Australian brands venturing into the world of physical retail after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartcompany.com.au\/retail\/queue-experience-wild-scenes-glassons-store-sydney-kikiva-brooki\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">building and nurturing a community online<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPhysical retail has to offer an experience, a sense of discovery and a genuine connection to the brand\u201d, says McCabe. <\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tRelated Article Block Placeholder<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tArticle ID: 343731\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartcompany.com.au\/retail\/jb-hi-fi-to-myer-what-australia-retail-results-reveal-about-squeezed-consumer\/\" class=\"\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ArticleImage_SC_1920x1080_3.jpg\" class=\"aspect-video object-cover h-auto w-auto\" alt=\"From JB Hi-Fi to Myer: What Australia\u2019s retail results reveal about the squeezed consumer\"  \/>\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was crucial that the Fitzroy Kip&amp;Co store didn\u2019t simply offer \u201ca conventional shop fit-out with products sitting on shelves,\u201d says the co-founder. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve created bedrooms, bathrooms, dining and living spaces, filled the store with bespoke pieces and objects we\u2019ve collected on our travels, and introduced products that you can only discover in store. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe want people to come in, have a wander, touch things, get inspired and hopefully discover something unexpected. For us, that sense of experience and community is where physical retail can be really powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It seems fitting too, that Kip&amp;Co would choose its home state to open its first store. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re a Melbourne-born brand, so Victoria always felt like the right place for our first store [and] Fitzroy in particular has always felt like Kip&amp;Co heartland,\u201d says McCabe, in reference to the suburb\u2019s creativity, culture and community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe also loved the idea of creating a physical home for Kip&amp;Co within a neighbourhood that already has such a strong identity. Gertrude Street gives us the opportunity to be part of that local community, while also creating a destination for customers from across Melbourne and beyond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, is this just the first of many physical stores for Kip&amp;Co?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRight now our focus is on Fitzroy and making our first store the best possible expression of Kip&amp;Co,\u201d says McCabe. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a big milestone for us, and there\u2019s a lot we want to learn from having our own physical retail space.
