Bystanders who intervened in the horror alleged attack of a mother and son in Melbourne\u2019s CBD have been described as \u201cheroic\u201d by police, while a man has since been charged over the incident.<\/p>\n
A man allegedly punched the boy in his upper body outside Victoria Police Centre on Spencer Street in Docklands about 1pm on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
A 46-year-old woman, who was with the boy at the time, intervened and was allegedly stabbed to the upper body.<\/p>\n
The alleged victims, who have been identified as a mother and her son, were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.<\/p>\n
Police in the area arrested a 27-year-old man and seized a pair of scissors.<\/p>\n
The alleged offender was charged with affray, intentionally causing injury and unlawful assault, conduct endangering life and conduct endangering serious injury.<\/p>\n
He was remanded in custody and is expected to appear before Melbourne Magistrates\u2019 Court on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Speaking to media on Tuesday, Superintendent Zorka Dunstan said the man had allegedly \u201crandomly punched\u201d the boy as he walked past.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnce he did that, he kept walking south. As he\u2019s kept walking, he\u2019s then turned around, he\u2019s grabbed the mother in a headlock and he\u2019s started to stab her repeatedly with a pair of scissors,\u201d Supt Dunstan said.<\/p>\n
She said a member of the public intervened and \u201cjumped onto\u201d the alleged attacker.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s grabbed him off the female and in addition, we had two other citizens come and assist him with pinning this male down,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The 27-year-old was then swiftly arrested by police.<\/p>\n
Two other children who witnessed the incident were not injured.<\/p>\n
The alleged offender was known to police in Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia.<\/p>\n
Superintendent Dunstan said police were \u201chorrified\u201d by the attack.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAny offending of this nature is horrific anywhere,\u201d Supt Dunstan said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s completely random. We\u2019re horrified by it.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m just grateful that we had people assist immediately.<\/p>\n
“There\u2019s no doubt that if they didn\u2019t assist, it would\u2019ve been a lot more serious.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Superintendent described the actions of those who intervened as \u201cheroic\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWithout a doubt without their intervention, it could\u2019ve been a lot worse,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
