After a former Jet scored the opener, it was a former Sky Blue who laid on the equaliser just seven minutes later.

Clayton Taylor played nearly 50 matches in the NPL for Sydney FC and it was the crafty midfielder who made something out of nothing by taking on three defenders by himself, before somehow emerging with the ball in the final third and producing a perfect ball for Adams, who fired venomously past the in-form Harrison Devenish-Meares.

In truth, it had not been the 24-year-old’s night up to that point, but his celebration – staring down the crowd nonchalantly – told a story.

Eli Adams gets his fourth goal in three games to level the tie for @NewcastleJetsFC 🥶

It’s some brilliant work from Clayton Taylor to find Newcastle’s Number Seven, who makes no mistake with the strike 💪

Watch #SYDvNEW live NOW on Paramount+ 📺 pic.twitter.com/8T8bxxITr4

— Paramount+ Australia (@ParamountPlusAU) May 9, 2026

This Jets side is not overawed by anything. Down 1-0 at the home of the most successful club in the competition? No issue for Milligan’s men, who once again found a way, this time as they hunt a treble in this finals series.

With 13 minutes to play, there was a potentially seismic moment for Sydney’s campaign, with the talismanic Joe Lolley returning off the bench for his first appearance of the Kisnorbo era. However, his entrance also saw the exit of Akon, who was later seen with ice strapped to his hamstring, sitting next to Stamatelopoulos, who applied his own ice pack.

As the minutes ticked by, Sydney looked the more likely to score. Lolley stung the palms of Delianov with a rasping cross from the right, while Ahmet Arslan was taken down by Daniel Wilmering in the area, with referee Daniel Elder waving away shouts for a penalty.

“The referee could see that might be shoulder-to-shoulder… it looked on the balance of probabilities, he’s come in from the blindside and the back,” commentator Andy Harper said on Paramount+

“But at live speed, the ref might have seen shoulder-to-shoulder, that’s the only explanation I can come up with.”

Based on this match, next weekend’s second leg is going to be appointment viewing.

The Jets will head back to McDonald Jones Stadium with huge home support behind them as they eye a first Grand Final appearance since 2018 and aim to keep the dream of a trophy treble alive.
