state, including a red fox in Osborne in metropolitan Adelaide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">SA&#8217;s Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) included the fox in its latest bird flu update that detailed five new suspected bird flu &#8220;events&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Samples have been sent to a national testing facility in Geelong for confirmation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Other affected species reported today included at least one Australian raven at Robe, little penguin at Southend, greater crested tern at Coonalpyn and Pacific gull on Kangaroo Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">PIRSA said reporting was now based on events, which may involve one or more animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">More than 300 infection events have been recorded across the country since the first case was detected in June, with South Australia having the most at 195 confirmed events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">H5N1 is an influenza virus and has been <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-08\/bird-flu-spreading-but-actions-can-help-protect-at-risk-animals\/106994352\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106994352\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">known to infect birds and mammals, including pets.<\/a> It has not been detected in Australian commercial poultry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Efforts to protect native birds held in captivity have begun at conservation sites around South Australia, with <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-25\/cleland-to-begin-vaccinating-birds-against-deadly-h5-bird-flu\/107076064\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107076064\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cleland Wildlife Park to vaccinate around 30 species in its aviaries<\/a> with federally approved vaccines. <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m
