The girl died in hospital on Tuesday night, NSW Police confirmed.<\/p>\n
\u201cOfficers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command commenced an investigation into the incident,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
\u201cInquiries are ongoing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tributes have begun rolling in \u2013 with sexual consent activist Chanel Contos describing the girl\u2019s death as \u201cinsanely preventable\u201d and adding she was devastated.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no safe way to engage in strangulation during sex, and unfortunately, mainly because of pornography, where young people are learning and mimicking scripts from that, this act that was traditionally on the fringes of kink culture has made it way into the mainstream,\u201d Ms Contos \u2013 the founder of Teach Us Consent \u2013 told The Sydney Morning Herald.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to seriously investigate the impact that pornography is having on shaping the sexual scripts and behaviours of young people.\u201d<\/p>\n
A University of Melbourne study found 50 per cent of young Australians had engaged in choking during sex.<\/p>\n
Researchers found strangulation during sex carried risks including brain injury and death.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no evidence there is any safe way to undertake strangulation,\u201d researchers stated.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was concerning to us that many of the respondents seemed to believe sexual strangulation can be done safely.\u201d<\/p>\n
