{"id":80841,"date":"2026-08-26T12:20:37","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T12:20:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/80841\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T12:20:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T12:20:37","slug":"firmus-wins-ai-factory-go-ahead-in-tasmanias-bell-bay-despite-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/80841\/","title":{"rendered":"Firmus wins AI factory go-ahead in Tasmania\u2019s Bell Bay despite protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AI infrastructure juggernaut Firmus has won council approval for its controversial Bell Bay data centre in Tasmania despite a prominent protest as locals voiced their fears over water, electricity and sound vibration issues.<\/p>\n<p>Tasmania\u2019s George Town Council gave the go-ahead for Firmus\u2019s AI factory at Bell Bay, on the former Gunns Pulp Mill site where two decades previously thousands of locals fought a doomed woodchip facility.<\/p>\n<p>The council in July <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/business\/companies\/firmus-technologies-tasmanian-ai-factory-plan-delayed-amid-community-concerns\/news-story\/d7f7000bb0197f201b9bb301824ee501\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"d7f7000bb0197f201b9bb301824ee501\" data-tgev-label=\"business\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had requested additional time<\/a> to weigh a raft of issues as the $15.5bn Firmus, co-founded by Oliver Curtis and Tim Rosenfield, worked to fast-track the development of factories across Tasmania, South Australia and Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>Its decision to approve the 288MW Tasmanian project will position the Firmus facility among the state\u2019s largest power users and open up a major new source of jobs and investment despite thousands of people signing an online petition against the \u00addevelopment.<\/p>\n<p>Two other sites, in Launceston and Wesley Vale, are also planned, with the trio of facilities to use a combined 418MW of power; about a third of the state\u2019s average winter energy use. <\/p>\n<p>Green groups and community protesters have urged Australia to follow Singapore and parts of the US <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/nation\/locals-and-political-foes-unite-to-urge-data-centre-moratorium\/news-story\/baef4fbc13d3fbd5fec48e1c235271e3\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"baef4fbc13d3fbd5fec48e1c235271e3\" data-tgev-label=\"nation\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in imposing a moratorium on new data centres<\/a> until more comprehensive planning and regulatory regimes were in place.<\/p>\n<p>The SA government has announced a royal commission into artificial intelligence in a bid to \u201cmaximise benefits and minimise unwanted impacts\u201d from the AI boom. <\/p>\n<p>Dozens of Tasmanian locals asked a string of questions to the council meeting on Tuesday afternoon on energy, water and sound concerns once the Firmus factory came online. <\/p>\n<p>While many were not classified local council matters, several of conditions were added to the project, including noise surveys and air-quality tests, along with limits on the use of 276 diesel generators.<\/p>\n<p>Firmus is riding a wave of backing for its AI factories from industry heavyweights including Nvidia and Blackstone, but <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/business\/oliver-curtis-on-superyacht-off-italian-riviera-as-his-cousin-and-firmus-cofounder-tim-rosenfield-fronts-hostile-local-forum\/news-story\/d99bd2010d708019e7001978360a28f6\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"d99bd2010d708019e7001978360a28f6\" data-tgev-label=\"business\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">people who live near its proposed plants<\/a> have questioned whether the company could be trusted \u00adoperating a data centre.<\/p>\n<p>Data centre operators are also grappling with proposed rules laid down by Anthony Albanese for developments to procure enough renewable energy supply for their energy needs over and above existing volumes.<\/p>\n<p>Federal Assistant Technology Minister Andrew Charlton said on Tuesday that he understood questions raised by local communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know there are a lot of concerns out there, a lot of concerns from people who find themselves suddenly living across the road from a data centre, who find their school or their preschool across the road from a data centre,\u201d Dr Charlton told ABC Perth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are concerns about noise.
