{"id":80845,"date":"2026-08-26T12:30:23","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T12:30:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/80845\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T12:30:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T12:30:23","slug":"unbelievable-iga-boss-reveals-staff-were-held-at-knifepoint-by-tobacco-thieves-as-coalition-flags-80pc-excise-cut-to-smash-the-black-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/80845\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Unbelievable&#8217;: IGA boss reveals staff were held at knifepoint by tobacco thieves as Coalition flags 80pc excise cut to &#8216;smash&#8217; the black market"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ritchies IGA staff were held at knifepoint and a store was robbed multiple times by tobacco thieves, the independent supermarket chain\u2019s CEO Fred Harrison has revealed, as the Coalition flags a major overhaul of the excise.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Harrison told the \u201cunbelievable\u201d story during a doorstop address in which the Coalition\u2019s Illicit Tobacco Task Force co-chairs Mary Aldred and Richard Colbeck announced further details.<\/p>\n<p>Legal tobacco prices have skyrocketed to $60 for a pack of 30 cigarettes due to Labor\u2019s excise, which has turned Australians onto the illegal packets which cost as little as $20.<\/p>\n<p>The Liberal MPs attended a Ritchies IGA supermarket in Mount Waverley to promote the taskforce, which will seek to cut Labor\u2019s tobacco excise by 80 per cent, alongside a \u201cSwiss army knife\u201d suite of policy options to drive down smoking.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Aldred said the opposition was proactively looking to \u201csmash the illegal tobacco market\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only way we&#8217;re going to be able to do that is with a Swiss Army knife of policy options, including drastically reducing the tobacco excise tax, getting tough on organised crime, getting better coordination and having a legalised vape market,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Colbeck said the 80 per cent excise cut was one of several \u201cmuch more ambitious\u201d measures aimed at reducing smoking rates in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Australian Bureau of Statistics data released in June found that nicotine consumption increased almost 40 per cent between 2017 and 2025.<\/p>\n<p>This is despite population growth only 14 per cent over the same period.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/9c59e89c63aa2b5a0d0e5d3a2b36d330.jpeg\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"Pressure grows on Albanese government to slash tobacco excise\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Ritchie\u2019s IGA CEO Fred Harrison said of the 85 stores in his network, the Mount Waverley outlet had been \u201chit six times\u201d by robbers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn each occasion, robberies have occurred with machetes. We&#8217;ve had staff held at knifepoint,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stress and trauma and angst this has caused our team has been unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On one occasion, Mr Harrison arrived at the store at 9am on a Saturday after it had been robbed at 7.50am and was told by a police officer that they knew who the offenders were.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said, \u2018Fred, we know who the offenders are. We know where they live. I&#8217;m doing the paperwork now. We&#8217;ll go around to their house this afternoon. We&#8217;ll bring them into the station. The bad news is by 6pm tonight they&#8217;ll be back on the street,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, Mr Harrison said he had become \u201creally proactive to try and tackle this\u201d, revealing he placed trackers in decoy cigarette packs to trace the thieves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA colleague and I came up with the concept of putting some air tags in some false packet of cigarettes,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Those packets were stolen.
