Cult retail brand Costco has landed on a home for its first Brisbane megastore on a prime site the size of 53 Olympic-sized swimming pools.<\/p>\n
The US retail behemoth has locked in a $145m deal to build its first-ever Brisbane store at a brand-new Brisbane Airport precinct opposite the international terminal.<\/p>\n
It will be Costco\u2019s first location in Brisbane and the fourth in Queensland after North Lakes (City of Moreton Bay), Bundamba (Ipswich) and Coomera (Gold Coast).<\/p>\n
The 6.7ha site will include a colossal 15,000sq m megastore, a 34-bowser fuel station, 870 car parks, a food court, and is set to open in late 2029.<\/p>\n
The members-only store will stock fresh food, groceries, electronics, apparel, optical, hearing aid and tyre centres and will employ about 250 staff once open.<\/p>\n
Perimeter drainage works have already started on site which is part of a bigger 51-hectare parcel of land \u2014 an area more than three times the size of South Bank Parklands.<\/p>\n
Brisbane Airport chief executive Gert-Jan de Graaff said Costco would be a popular drawcard for the new precinct and attracting new neighbours.<\/p>\n
\u201cCostco\u2019s commitment marks the beginning of a new chapter for Brisbane Airport and is the first of many announcements to come as we bring to life a new mixed-use precinct for the city,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cCostco is just the beginning. <\/p>\n
\u201cEven a retailer of this scale will occupy only 12 per cent of this huge development site, leaving significant opportunities for other businesses to establish themselves alongside one of the world\u2019s most recognised retail brands.\u201d<\/p>\n
Costco Australia and New Zealand country manager Chris Tingman said the $145m investment into the new Brisbane Airport warehouse was a strong vote of confidence in the area\u2019s growth.<\/p>\n
