A person has died and two others have been seriously injured after a crash in Canberra’s north this morning.<\/p>\n

ACT Policing said the three cyclists were hit by a car on Gungahlin Drive in Palmerston about 6:30am.<\/p>\n

The crash occurred just south of the Kosciuszko Avenue intersection.<\/p>\n

The Emergency Services Agency (ESA) issued an alert to say Gungahlin Drive was closed in both directions from Well Station Drive to The Valley Avenue.<\/p>\n

It said the road would be closed “for some time”.<\/p>\n

Personnel from ACT Fire & Rescue, the ACT Ambulance Service and ACT Policing were all at the scene.<\/p>\n

ACT police later confirmed one person had died, one person was in a critical condition and another was in a serious condition.<\/p>\n

The community has been asked to avoid the area and use an alternative route.<\/p>\n

The death is the 10th fatality on ACT roads this year.<\/p>\n

In a social media post, the Canberra Bilbys Triathlon Club said the cyclist who died was a member of its local group.<\/p>\n

The club said it was exploring “support options” for its members.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Please look after each other this morning and we will share more information when possible,” the post said.<\/p>\n

The triathlon club is Canberra’s biggest, with around 300 members spanning beginners and experienced triathletes, according to its website.<\/p>\n

Advocacy group ‘heartbroken’<\/p>\n

Cycling advocacy group Pedal Power described the crash as “heartbreaking” and extended its condolences to loved ones of the person who died.<\/p>\n

“Our thoughts are also with the injured riders, the driver, everyone waiting for news and the emergency services personnel who responded,” Pedal Power ACT Executive Director Cecily Michaels said.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the organisation urged the public not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding the crash while they remain under investigation.<\/p>\n
